2450mAh iPhone 4 replacement battery (vs original 1420mAh)

I got my iPhone 4 on the day it was launched and the battery is now beginning to deteriorate as expected. I've therefore looked at replacing the battery, which according to a YouTube video, looks like a very easy task.

There seem to be a lot of iPhone 4 replacement batteries on the market, some being identical to the originals, some being third party makes. Although I prefer an original, I saw a 2450mAh battery on eBay, which is 73% more capacity than the original 1420mAh battery in the iPhone 4. This strikes me as suspicious for several reasons, not least that the recently launched iPhone 4S has a battery that is only 1432mAh. If a third party can produce a battery the same size with a 2450mAh capacity, then why doesn't Apple put these in the iPhone 4S? Am I right to be suspicious?

Yes if it looks like a scam then in all probability it is a scam.

Avoid any battery which is unbranded, claims excessively higher mAh, and especially avoid batteries which are gold in colour with the mAh in the red marking - that is a poor quality Chinese battery, will have much lower mAh than the original battery, and potentially dangerous to boot. When I was looking at replacements for my HTC, Anker, Mugen Power came up as being good quality.
  • Generally these batterys will be dead after a month or so of use as they arent very reliable.

Thanks for the replies. I notice on the picture of this battery that it says 3.7V and 5.25Whr. To convert this to mAh, you divide the Whr by the voltage and again by 1000 (to convert from Ah to mAh) which gives 1419mAh, i.e. the same as the original iPhone 4 battery, and not the 2450mAh claimed. It also says 2350mAh in one place and 2450mAh in another. With so many inconsistencies, it's clearly a scam. Nobody bought it before the auction closed, but I see there are plenty of others advertised by other eBay sellers.
  • Stay away from non-original iphone batteries! When i had my 3GS, i bought a 1900mAh battery on ebay...wasn't the cheapest and also from a reputed seller. Did it make any difference? I found it was no better/worse than the original despite the 1900mAh claim. If you need a new battery, i strongly recommend you pop into your nearest Apple store and them to supply/fit it for you. You're guaranteed to get a like for like :)

I have had no issues with non-OEM batteries, but on the subject of doubling the capacity, I have always been sold the battery with a replacement back cover for the phone. It does what it is supposed to do, but the handset is not larger in thickness because of the additional cells footprint.

How does this work? The original back cover is glass.

The new back replaced the original glass with a polymer 'cap' (complete with logo!) that was pretty robust, You could then retro-fit the original glass panel and battery when reselling it.
