Car Hire without Credit Card

I don't have a credit card, and don't want one. I am flying into rome in May and was wondering where/if i can be hired a small car for the week without a CC? Obviously i have Visa Debit. Also i have seen somewhere that if i join Avis Preferred then i don't need a credit card - does anyone have any experience of this?

If you have credit card, Your payment mode become easy.I think to if you are hiring a car it is essential to have a credit card. It is time savvy and the process of payment through it is very simple.

Thanks for your reply JohnPhilips, i don't doubt that having a credit card will help, but i don't have or wish to be forced to get one.
There are others on here that have hired cars with debit cards, wondered if anyone had any advice for rome or by using avis preferred?

I'll answer my own question in the hope that it helps someone else.

Customer: I would like to know whether Avis can rent a car to someone without a credit card. I only have visa debit...
karen: In Italy?
karen: Yes but the card must conform to the following The Debit Card must be a Visa Debit or Mastercard Debit but not Delta, Solo, Switch, Maestro, Electron etc. The card must have the word DEBIT written on it and the numbers will be embossed (raised). Avis does not accept the “prepaid” debit cards at all.
Customer: yes in italy. Is an amount taken off the card as deposit at the time of collection
karen: A full tank of petrol and if you do not pre pay the rental amount they hold the whole cost of the rental as well

I know avis are not the cheapest but i joined avis preferred (free) and got a voucher for a free upgrade in the post
