I knew it would open a can of worms - sorry :o

I bought one for £2 like anguk just so I have one less job to do now I have a small baby - constantly cleaning the soap pump/soap/sink in the utility room when my husband gets car oil everywhere - how do you press a soap pump dispenser with oil covered hands without getting it dirty?

Why do people have such an issue on what you spend your money on?

Anyway, hubby managed to lever it off in the end though the plastic looks a bit more fragile now. Think I will get him to drill a hole for future refills, thanks everyone.

Why not go to the bathroom and have a go? Then imagine how much easier it would be if your soap dispenser was automatic.

I have tried on more than one occasion and failed.

That is why I asked the question.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

I'm not in the least bit embarrassed.Anguk makes a very valid point and one that hadn't crossed my mind. Also about touching a hand pump when your hands are covered in dirt. My opinion is aimed at those buying it based on the advert's selling point which is quite frankly ridiculous and is clearly marketed at consumerists.

I must confess to also having the same thought as Becs, when I first saw these things. Scare your victims into buying the base unit and a probably partly-filled refill cheap, and then lock them into buying your expensive refills. Brilliant marketing.

The situation strikes me as similar to ink jet printer cartridges. If a machine in a factory can fill it, I can refill it, albeit a lot slower.

I also accept their possible usefulness for disabled persons.

I've got one in the kitchen and the bathroom, I didn't buy it for it's germ busting qualities (good hand-washing with ordinary soap is just as effective) but my OH only has use of one hand and they're great for him. He can't use a bar of soap very well or an ordinary soap pump with one hand but he can manage to just stick his hand under the Dettol automatic pump. ;)

One of my uncles had one of his arms amputated as a child, just above the elbow. He had a prosthesis (called Marmaduke inevitably within the family) and as well as a hand in a glove for cosmetic reasons which attached to it he had all kinds of nifty tools as well, one of which was a nail-brush. Fantastic! He was the one who made furniture, kept the garden, had all kinds of practical hobbies and did an active job, all with only one arm and Mr Marmaduke.

Hi All. My OH bought one because it was a gadget <sigh> and I had forgotten about it until I saw this thread. I thought when he bought it that it might stop him using 5 pumps of the handwash each time he washes his hands, but no he just waits there longer to get a really big pile of soap - most of which goes straight down the drain!!! When it ran out he didn't buy any more refills (probably because I moaned at him so much for buying it in the first place) and we went back to normal handwash. I just thought though - has anyone tried putting watered-down soap into one the dispenser? :D I'm off to try it and see if it still pumps ok.... and more crucially, if he notices the difference

Edit again: you can also refill it using a ketchup squeezy bottle (the type you see in cafes). I've seen those bottle in Poundland:

That is so easy! Thanks for that :D

With all due respect. How doe's someone with one hand wash it?
My OH has two hands but he has had all the fingers and thumb amputated on his left hand so his hand is more like a stump than a hand if you know what I mean? He can't hold anything with his left hand or do much with it but he can use it to rub his right hand clean when washing. It's amazing how you adapt and what you can do when you have to! :D

I bought one of these as my son is disabled and although he can wash his hands, his motor skills are such that he used to knock the soap bottle over every time he pushed the top down.
We have a supply of 10 ml syringes as he takes his meds from them. When I've used one for meds, I rinse it out and then use it to refill the soap bottle from cheap handwash (or sometimes not so cheap but cheaper than those refills that are a complete con.

  • ive got one of these too - bought it for £1 cos the box was squashed, not that i should have to justify why i bought it.
i just prise the lid off and refill it with cheapo liquid soap - i know what you mean about it looking like it would break though ...
