Private plate questions :)
Hope this is correct place to post.
Considering buying DD1 private plates for her 18th birthday, anyone have experience of this?
Best site to use? Are there further costs added to plate price (something about tranferring plates) ? After purchase is that it, theres not a yearly charge or something is there?
Thank you in advance....i dont even drive myself so I'm awfully clueless....:o

£80 to transfer to a vehicle with no annual charges (apart from road tax). £105 to keep on retention (ie not on a vehicle) for 1 year, £130 2 yrs or £155 3 years. If not on a vehicle the retention will need to be renewed at the end of the selected period.0

(Devils advocate question)
Why would you want to draw attention to a young driver? Both from the police (not as big a problem as with boys) and possible unwanted attention. Does she want everyone to know where she is?
To answer your question molerat has covered it but in the vast majority of instances these plates are over pricee so on't expect to be able to sell it in the future.0 -
I think the money would be better spent paying for the horrific insurance.0

Buy from the DVLA's own website, which costs £250 for most numbers, which is fully inclusive for putting the number on a car.

Other companies tend to buy from the same website and then add their 50%."There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe a 'Princess Coronation' locomotive in full cry. We shall never see their like again". O S Nock0 -

Depends on what the plate is, if it's only something with just the number "1" on it and a few letters then yes probably (and expensive!), rather than a Northern Irish issued plate, which usually has 3 letters and 4 numbers, which can be picked up relatively cheap.
Most people buy plates to keep, especially if it means something to them i.e. has their initials, or car related. Hence it will probably not mean anything to any future buyer unless it means something to them to.
Or people buy them as an investment, as some do go up in value - especially if they can get a plate with relates to a future car model.
I had a personal plate when I bought my first motorbike 19, drove around in my dad's car with a personal plate when I was 17, not had any trouble with the police whatsoever, didn't really attract much attention.
Although it's not money saving, but I think it's a nice way to personalise your vehicle for something you'll probably keep for a while.0 -
A very nice present for an 18 year old, something they will cherish and always remember it as they will see it every day on their car/future cars, much better than a phone that they will change all the time
as has been said check the dvl site firstI

Thanks everyone for the great advice. We are only tossing round a few ideas atm, but defo want her to have something she can keep and remember. Only thing she could think of when we asked her what she might like as her present was spending money for her holiday. I dont want to do that, as she is capable of earning and saving enough for that herself, and the fact we.d like her to have something she can keep.
I do understand the concerns about drawing attention, but the letters we have in mind wouldnt mean much to anyone else.
Also....notmyrealname.....her first years insurance has been paid in advance, thanks tho for being concerned as to how I spend my money.
You'll make my day if I know I've been helpful to you in some small way,
