No sound

Normally I have the sound tuned off, this herals from days when the start up woke my wife. But now and again, I like to listen to vaious things, but despite numerous attempts fiddling here and there, I'm still left with no sound. Maybe someone could direct this old f**t along the right path to restoring the sound. before you ask, this old f**t hasn't gone deaf.

Don't want to be accused of teaching Old F**t's to suck eggs, but if you have used sound before and "nothing has changed" then first check that your speakers are powered, plugged in and switched on!

Then go to "Device Manager" and Sound Controllers. What's listed? Are any disabled?

Check the volume control that it hasn't been muted.

Take a look at Windows Media player (or whatever else you are using) to ensure that it hasn't been muted.

To test for deafness, tell the OT you've just bought a fire engine on Ebay .......
  • And to avoid waking anyone up choose "no sounds" from the sounds tab in the audio and sounds options in the control panel.

Johnmc. I have windows '98SE if that's important. Where do I start looking for Device Manager? and sound controllers ?.

What I have done is:- My Computer>Contol Panel> Sounds then I get Sound Properties and a list headed Events. I can scroll through a longish list then. But I daren't touch anything ...........yet.

  • Hi,

so you're sure that your speakers are switched on, there is usually a wee LED light that lets you know that they are on,

and you're sure that you don't have the volume muted, does small speaker icon in bottom right hand corner have a small red X on it, if so then click and untick mute,

while you're in Control Panel>Sounds>Events, highlight anything with a wee speaker icon beside it, click the > box, and you should get some sort of noise, that will test you system sounds.

what frugal.... said. Did you get any sounds?

I'm using XP, but should be pretty close.

Control panel / System. Hardware tab and then Device manager.

Click on the "Sounds, Video and Game Controllers".

Does she know you've bought the fire engine yet?

    you see this:-

and you're sure that you don't have the volume muted, does small speaker icon in bottom right hand corner have a small red X on it, if so then click and untick mute,

well there is no red cross, and this:-

while you're in Control Panel>Sounds>Events, highlight anything with a wee speaker icon beside it, click the > box, and you should get some sort of noise, that will test you system sounds.

I clicked everything with a speaker and no noise.

    and this:-
Control panel / System. Hardware tab and then Device manager.

Click on the "Sounds, Video and Game Controllers".

at this stage, if I highlite sounds/vid etc, I gat the choice of Properties/Refresh/remove/ Print.

    So what then?

Did that, the balance is half way, as is the volume. None of the four mute boxes are ticked.
