Barclays keep rejecting me..

Hi all,

Barclays seem to have an issue with me and they won't tell me what it is.
I applied for a premier banking account and they have turned me down, this is rather strange as I have never missed a payment on anything, ever, my net debt is less than 1/3 my salary and have no issues getting credit whenever I have needed it.

I complained about this thinking they had made a mistake and all I got was a standard rejection letter, is there any way I can demand they tell me what it is that concerns them?

This isnt the first time this bank have !!!!!!ed me about, 18 months ago I applied for a barclaycard and they sent me one out with £8500 limit but when I called to activate it I was told to cut it up and that the contract was null and void with an equal lack of explaination.

Hope someone can help me or explain their perplexing decision making process?

Thanks for the inevitable sarcastic/obvious reply, knew there would be at least one.

what is concerning me is that there is an error somewhere in the computer system which I am not seeing (I have recently checked all 3 credit files and they look as they should)

Is the anything else that is worth checking or should I just accept that myself and this institution are never going to have a fruitful relationship

  • When an account is recalled or closed after first being accepted there is something they really don't like. Underwriters will look more closely at certain cases. It is possible that you have something behind the scenes which is not so obvious when first applying. It's impossible for an outsider to pin point what the problem is. Worth checking your credit file for any foul play.

Is there any way to check credit reports in more detail than the standard set up as I'm obviously not seeing what is there....

You can do a subject access request with Hunter http://www.nhunter.co.uk/

Subject access is the way forward. Also approach the bank direct.

Not that you've asked but the Barclays Premier Life account is not worth the fee. The so called service provided by their Relationship Manager's is woeful. There are other banks that will treat you far better - if Barclays have an issue with you at this stage it won't improve in the future. Forget them and move on.

    Cheers pwuk,

We have a Santander reward account which suits our needs right now, just the bundled mobile phone ins and airport lounge access appealed as I travel occasionally for work and we don't have any mobile cover as of yet.... Lol

I guess I'm just wound up because it feels personal nowadays, but after some investigation I have found that my wife has a default on one credit agreement in 2008 where she missed the last payment of £35. This is probably the reason why there has been an issue.

  • Potentially or as said earlier you simply don't fit the type of customer they are looking for.
Can I find out my credit score?
You do not have a single credit score or rating. Different organisations take different information into account when working out your credit score and may have different scores for different products. (Kindly from Experian)
  • If u have the Santander reward already the premium account would give u the extra benefits you're looking for and you would keep the same account details. No relationship manager but to be honest your home insurance would probably cover your phone anyway.
  • I wouldn't worry too much about the airport lounge access. Airport Angel have a limited range and probably not worth the £25 fee. Personally I've always found my local Barclays branch and the relationship manager very helpful. I guess they are a bit selective for their premier account though I would have thought they would have welcomed your fee. Other banks though offer a similar service though you may have to earn a set amount before they will consider you.
