Hello,
Proud new owner of a new Dell laptop, I haven't switched it on yet. I'd like to ask your advice please of how best to protect it?
I had McAfee with another laptop, but; it seemed to send the system in a 'lock' and in the end I couldn't use it anymore.
I'm not very technical.
I use aol - but come May I'm changing to Virgin.
Thank you for reading and thank you for any reply - I do appreciate it - I'm the sort of person who may end up spending way too much in Pc world or such like as I have no idea....

#1 Don't use the AOL software - you don't need it to connect to AOL.
#2 Use Avast antivirus (free), and bin McAfee. http://www.avast.com/en-gb/free-antivirus-download
#3 Install and use occasionally Malware Bytes Anti Malware (free) http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free
No need to spend anything, and the above will be better and safer than McAfee.0 -
If you don't know a lot about computers id use a paid solution. The best out there atm is kasperski. Comes up top in a lot of tests. does the best in man in the browser attacks which is the fastest growing technique used for grabbing pals bank details.
ps get your security online will be cheaper than a shop
Free solutions are ok for people who are confident in there ability to spot material that might not be genuine. If you don't understand things such as the tcp/ip stack and ports id stick to a paid solution.

Avast. Worked a lot with computer security and both the free and paid for variations are excellent.0

Couldn't agree more about Mcafee. Their support is useless and product is atrocious. I would advise anyone buying anew system to remove it immediately. Insist the shop removes it as part of the sale.
Use Avast or AVG or Microsoft Security Essentials.0 -
I've used it on a few machines (I previously had AVG which seemed to be on a "go slow").
Seems fine.
I also occasionally run Malwarebytes.0 -
AVG , they have most of the virus definitions before microsoft doDon't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.0

I have used Vipre Premium to cover my three computers. Yes, you have to pay for it, but the technical support when you need it is free and very efficient.0
