What is a Group Electricity Meter?
Hi,
I have just had someone from G4S around to read my gas & electric meters, but when he asked where they were he said he had 1x gas meter & 3x electric meters to read.
Now I was very surprised by this so he gave me the actual number off the 1 & only electric meter we have & advised me to ring British Gas (my supplier). When I eventually got put through to the correct department I was told that this was a Very Rare type of meter, in fact it is so rare that in all the time he had worked there (just over 1yr) I was the first person to ring up to ask about this. He has told me that I am only going to receive a single bill, but I still feel unsure as to why I would have this type of meter.
So can anyone shed some light on what this 'Group Meter' is & why would they choose to fit as the replacement meter when they changed it early last year. I live in a 4 bedroom house with my family & there are no other people this meter is used for, so I am baffled.
Any help or explanation about this would be appreciated.
Thanks

Do you have a 3 phase supply? Could you post a picture of your meter board?Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0

As above poster says, it sounds like 3 x 1phase meters have been exchanged for a 1 x 3phase meter.
never heard of it called a group meter... 3 ph meters are pretty common...
easiest way, either post a picture of the meter up, or if it has 8 cables in the meter it will be 3phase.Working within the gas and electric industry since 2008'0 -
Hi,
Had a busy few days & only just got time to check for replies, sorry.
I have taken a pic of the meter, but as I'm a new user I am not allowed to add it to my reply.
So here's a description which I hope might help:
It is small in size & is white, with an LCD display.
It says on it 'Single Phase Watt Hour Meter' made by Landis+Gyr
1000 imp/kWh
Type 5235A
It also has a large Bar Code on it, with the serial no. below it
There are 4 thick Grey wires coming out the base.
All I was told is that this is a Group meter, but hopefully the description might make some sense to you.
Thanks againMany Thanks :hello:

Still no idea what they have meant by group.
I asked my engineers some of them with 40+ years in electric and they have no idea what it would mean for a single phase meter..Working within the gas and electric industry since 2008'0 -

What about the others? You can have multiple meters for numerous reasons. Does you bill have one or more S numbers?
OP says he has only one meter, meter reader said he had three.
I've only got one meter, but with three readings, for Comfort Plus Heating.
OP, is this the meter, if so looks like a single rate meter.0 -
You can't post pics, but you can upload them to a photo-sharing site and add a link.No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Hi,
Thanks again for the replies,
That is a picture of the meter which I have & when I spoke to the person who came to read it he told me he had 3 meters to read but all with the same code on it. That's when he told me to ring British Gas & they said it was a 'Group Meter', but as I could not find anything about these on the net I thought I'd ask on here. I was assured by B.G. that I was only to be charged for one reading but he still kept saying this was a rare group meter.
So I'm still none the wiser about this group meter thing, I think the person at B.G. was just trying to baffle me, which he succeeded in doing.
Thanks again for all your help.:)Many Thanks :hello:

I tried uploading the pics via Photobucket & I've even tried adding quotes, but as I'm still classed as a newbie I'm not allowed to add links for either. Many Thanks :hello:
