Open up IE and in the top right hand corner (under the X) you will see a 'cog/wheel'.
Click on this and then on the drop down menu click on about internet explorer.

Unless the computer is hundreds of years old, you will almost certainly be on IE6, 7, 8 or 9.
XP came with IE6 as standard, can be upgraded to IE8. If nothing else, get off IE6 sooner rather than later.
Vista can with IE7 as standard, can be upgraded to IE9.
Windows 7 comes with IE8 as standard, can be upgraded to IE9.

For the record, Win98 Original came with IE4, Win98 SE came with IE5, WinME IE5.5 and Win2k IE5. All of these can be upgraded to IE6 but no later.

Pedant's corner: W7 comes with a choice of browsers, of which IE9 is the Microsoft offering (if you must).

Win7 comes with IE8 and nothing else.
You are probably referring to "Browser Choice", which comes as part of a Windows Update.
