Help, ! insured my car twice!

Hi all,

in a bit of a fuddle, i was checking my insurance with AA online, to claim for new windscreen, and upon logging in, it said i had cancelled my insurance in Nov 2011! what, i panicked, do i fone, will they claim all the cash, will the refer me to police! i decided to source new insurance which was more expensive. that cover started at 1216 yesterday. I then had my wife say that the AA are taking the money off me still, i then foned and guess what, I DO HAVE COVER! not even an apology.

Any way, i called the current(re new) insurer, 1st Capitol, to explain, and a chap implied that once my first payment comes off, they will work out what i will get back!. What, i called them about 150, approx 1.5 hours after i placed the cover. I even found the bank, and its not been presented yet.

To be fair, a customer service lady contacted via email to request proof of cover, so logged back in under new AA detaisl, and sent her my cover note via pdf.

However today i have an email from another company, Premium Credit, welcoming to there fold. What is going on, not happy now.

Any one been as stupid as me ? what do i do?

No not been as stupid as that, you need to cancel a policy or 2, you sure you dont have any other policies.
  • Dont know 1st Capital by name but I would suspect they are a broker. Brokers fairly frequently use external credit providers if you want to pay by installments rather than lump sum and so that will be how Premium Credit fit in the picture.

You are more likely to get the AA to cancel free of charge than 1st Capital but what is your ideal situation? Do you have a screen print with it showing your policy cancelled? Does it still show cancelled if you log in?
  • i just want to negate the cover that i dont need from 1st Capitol, as i can prove i was covered by AA. and have supplied them with request for docs to prove this, and im sure they have a dbase to prove im currently covered, since nov 2011.

I don't have much knowledge of insurance but isn't there a cooling off period?
  • A cooling off period simply means you have the right to cancel, it doesnt mean that there isnt a charge for making the cancellation. Once the cooling off period has expired there is no automatic right to be able to cancel and whilst most insurers do allow you to cancel the core policy many of the add ons (eg legal expenses) cannot be.

I say re cancelling the AA policy because you have a justified complaint about them and so more likely to get them to waive any fees. To 1st Capital you are basically having to admit you were an idiot and rely on their goodwill to waive the fees, you have to remember that it will have cost them money to sell you the policy which you are asking them to write off due to your own error.
  • yes, i am an idiot, thats my admission, however, they will not tell me the cancellation fee firstly, the require me to sign a DD first, this behaviour is ridiculous.

im looking for solutions here, not for defence or justification of theyre actions, im aware of what theyre costs may be, but how much work did they do in 1.5 hours!!

    Don't sign,
If you haven't completed the agreement, don't do it now.
If they won't give you a price, broken down as to what the fees are, submit a written complaint, then refer it to the FOS if they still won't give you a reasonable answer.
  • Cheers Mikey, thats my gut thought, thought i was dealing with 1st CApital rep for a moment or too earlier,,
