Caz - I would ignore these judgmental people who clearly have no idea about your situation. Try the dealing the debt board who are quite friendly and non-judgmental.

Very true but one thing we can be sure of the OP cannot repay the debt for whatever reason and poor mum is picking up the grief.

Yes sure and the OP is trying to help her mum by coming here for advice.
Do you really think she sounds like the sort of person who has lots of assets hanging around that could easily be sold but hasn't so far thought of that?
If she's on benefits with 4 kids, then chances are she doesn't have a Rolex or a Ferrari that could solve the problem.
The type of possesions she probably has (second hand childrens clothes and toys) are probably near to worthless.
I suspect it would be impossible to fit 3 jobs around childcare even if there were jobs around for unskilled people.
I agree that the debt is Caz's responsibility, but there doesn't appear to be a lot of empathy that some people are in a situation where they can NOT pay through no fault of their own.
Although the mum is the victim the mum also has to take some responsibility for HER decision to lend to her daughter, without putting contingencies in place (like insisting on redundancy/sickness/accident insurance). The responsibility for the borrowing from the CC company lies very definitely with the mum.

thx for all the responses, heres the situation,we have asked barclaycard to lower the payments to around 30 pound ,they wont so for the last few months she has been paying what she can as little as 20 pound sometimes but because she is not meeting the minimum of 60 pound with no interest they are putting the interest on still, she has no assets doesnt own her own home or any savings.i am going to write to them to see if the bill can be squashed its worth a try and read the other forums like some of you have said.and just to mention i have tried getting a part time job with no success,i have no qualifications look after 4 kids, and live in a poverty stricken area with no jobs, and before anyone says anything about people on the dole ,my eldest daughter is 19 got gcse's a levels, and is studying at birmingham uni to get a degree in buisiness management, she has been applying for jobs around 50 a week since leaving 6th form and she is still unable to find work, even part time, from cleaning to shop work office etc ,so what chance do i have.i had a bad start in life but ive tried to give my kids the best and im proud that my eldest is where she is.i wish people wouldnt have a blk and white view of the world and stereo type people not all on benefits want to be their but for some its a necessity ,ive worked before and i ended up in a worse situation, and barely survived i wouldnt put my kids through that again,so before you respond to people like me and have a one way opinion just think would you be so judgemental if it was you with after paying your bills you have 5 pound left to treat the kids,i dont think so.and she owes around 2000/2500 pound it was only 3000 grand when it started over 6 years ago

I agree with everything you have said apart from the "poverty" bit. You area is NOT "poverty stricken". While it may fulfil some technical definition of a low income level compared to the national average, it is nowhere near the state of being "poverty stricken" that word evokes.

It drives me mad when people use it about the UK! (This isn't a rant aimed solely at you by the way - just generally speaking!).

Probably not, but neither does there appear to be a great deal of understanding that this person cannot simply walk our the door and get offers of employment or perhaps sell their collection of valuable designer clothing and jewelry.
I think some people are living in a different world without any empathy for others.
I live in a different world but I do understand that there are people out there not in the same situation.

You are correct that poverty is a relative term, but I think you may need to alter your own definition.
The official definition of the poverty line in Britain is any family living on less than 60 per cent of the median income/

In this country it means relative poor - it doesn't mean starving, homeless etc.

Barclaycard have been helping your mum. They froze the interest for 2 years in the expectation that your mum will get the loan paid off. The fact that that wasn't achieved lies at you and your mum's doorstep and now it is your call on what happens next. At a guess DCA's calling your mum.

Barclaycard did their bit you have failed to dig your mother out of the hole you put her in.

It would be a good idea to post your SOA on here, so people could sugget ways that you could cut your expenditure in order to pay the debt.

Have you got anything to sell ?

They won't freeze the interest if she is making payments. To get it written off your Mum would have to go bankrupt which costs several hundred pounds.
  • I think you'll find that Barclaycard have been more than helpful.

Taking all emotions out, your situation isn't much different to the majority of folks out there. Your daughter at uni has nothing to do with anything. People don't get upvotes for carrying out their parental obligations.

it would take alot more than a few sarky comments to upset me im made of strongerstuff than that ,you have to be ,being a single parent, and as for trying to get upvotes i was just trying to explain where ive got my eldest child to and hopefully the others will follow, not to score points, im not judgmental of others but i didnt want my kids pregnant like me at 16 and being in the sort of situation im in now so yes i might be on the dole but ive done my upmost to make sure my kids dont turn out like me,so i take my hat off to myself and give myself a pat on the back everytime i look at them.but back to the point like i said ive tried getting a part time job but doing that even if i could get one id end up worse off and in a worse predicament, and as for stuff to sell like what the kitchen sink im on benefits, alot of people out their think its free money we get ,i have to live on very little money and have nothing left at the end of the week, and i surpose alot of you will think well get a job, even if i could id have to earn over 400 pound a week to cover my benefits i receive and before anyone says 400pw i dont see nearly 200 of it as it goes to my rent, and after i pay the basics gas food elec water tv lic i have 5 pound left, could you live on that.dont stereo type me to what you think people on the dole are,i agree alot are what you think and god i know a few well quite a few,but the system is messed up,i mean i have around 200 pound to live on a week yet my ex who gets dla and everything else tht goes with it because "hes got issues" gets around 250/300 just for himself,to just go and p*** it all up the wall wheres the fairness in that,my daughters boyfriend same nothing wrong with him gets dla and hes on about the same money as me ,my 10 year old has scoliosis i tried to claim dla for her they knocked me back,if only some of you could live in my situation for a week you would probably have a different opinion.anyway thx LISSYLOO for the support i appreciate it ,i guessed from what you said earlier you are in a better financial situation than me and its nice to know that everyone dont have such a bad opinon of people like me it means alot, but just for some of the few on this site if you have a job going for me what pays more than 400pw then please get in touch id love to be earning as much as you, chances are all you with those opinions of me ask yourself this if you had your own buisiness and someone like me walked in you would probably reject me because ive no experience and dont fit your perfect criteria and their is your anwser.and last but no means least i know this debt is my responsibility i never said it wasnt i came on here for advice not to be judged or quoted pathetic unhelpful comments hopefully ill find a way to sort this out for my mum and a big thx to most of you for the advice, especially lissylou
