hi I'm trying to find out if me and my girlfriend can get any help

her dad recently passed away and she is wanting to carry on renting the same property, the landlords say this is fine and the rent is £350 per month,

she is 20 and works around 32 hours a week and get s around £750 a month after tax

i am 23 and currently on income based JSA and get £212 a month

the household bills come to around £350 a quarter

and we prob spend around £300 a month on food shopping and petrol for traveling to work.

i have searched the net, asked at citizens advice and the job center but so far i can't make any sense of anything

trying to find out if we can get any help with rent etc....

does anyone out there have a good knowledge of the system......????

if so any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Are you sure as hat is way below minimum wage!

I dont quite understand what you are asking? Do you mean is there any more financial help for you? If so you can look at the turn2us.org.uk benefit calculator.

I would have thought that as you are on JSA and your gf's income is low that you could get housing benefit to help pay the rent but I am no expert in this area, maybe someone else will know if I am correct

Then she should definitely be getting more than £600 a month - is her tax code correct?

If you are living together you are not entitled to income based JSA as it would be based on household income. You might be entitled to some LHA.

You can identify the maximum rate of LHA for a 1 bedroom property on the Direct Gov website. Then put your income into the Turn2us online benefit calculator which will work out any LHA and council tax discount that may be due.

She earns £231 gross for a 37 hour week and will pay modest tax because she's on NMW and because there's a tax free allowance of £7,475, then 10% on the next £2,560 she earns, and finally 20% on the remaining 2k of her salary. Simply assuming that she loses 20% of her income to tax/NI across her whole salary is not correct.

Perhaps she needs to check that she's got the right tax code?
She will be netting around £202 per week which works out at £877 per month. This excludes any pension contributions she may make to the company, though.

When you move in together, you will be treated by the benefit system as if you have a single household income and that you support each other - one partner's earnings will influence the receipt of means tested benefits for the other partner.
  • £800 (her wages) + £212 (Your JSA)
    - £350 for rent
    - £200 for food and petrol
    - £75 in bills (you said £250 a quarter)

    = £387 surplus.

So I still dont really understand what you are asking, or what you cant make sense of.

There's no 10% tax bracket anymore.

£6.25 ph for a 37.5 hour week is a monthly take home of £887 (thanks to http://www.thesalarycalculator.co.uk/hourly.php). If she is not getting something like that then in all probability her tax code is either incorrect or it has been amended due to previous tax owed - standard tax code is 747L, what is hers?
