Clarification of DSR and my return time rights?

Options
I bought a computer motherboard from another retailer, and want to return it, i informed them within 7 days of the desire to return and an rma was opened.

This was closed after 7 days (inc weekend), i only noticed it was cancelled the day before i was going to return it.

I thought i had 30 days, is this true?

The retailer doesnt reply to any messages i leave. I am slightly confused as to whether i can still return it or not according to DSR.

You have seven working days, starting with the day after delivery, to notify then of your cancellation of the contract. You must do that in writing or email.
It is not necessary to return the thing in that time.

Have a look at the OFT's guide to the DSRs for further detail.

Not sure what your second sentence means.

the rma was opened in 7 days,

then another 7 days passed, and the status of the RMA was 'cancelled'
i had previously thought you had 30 days to return it physically once the RMA was opened

Without looking into the depths of the legislaiton I wouldnt worry. Even returnign it after 20 days will be OK as long as you notified them within 7 working days of recieving the goods.

With computer retailers I woudl be more worried about the lack of communication and closed RMA.

If you send something back without a valid RMA then you might find it gets lost.. I would deffo get another RMA first.

All your answers are in that document I linked to earlier.

In particular, on page 25 you will see...
When do I have to refund a consumer’s money if they cancel an order?
3.46 As soon as possible after the consumer cancels, and in any case within 30 days at the latest. You must refund the consumer’s money even if you have not yet collected the goods or had them returned to you by the consumer. You cannot insist on the goods being received by you before you make a refund.
Legally, you can take as long as you like to return the goods, but the seller must refund you within 30 days, whether the goods are returned or not. But don't expect that to happen.

Ring them. Do they have a phone number?

    Write a real letter.

As mo786uk said, you need a valid RMA.
When you send the goods back, use a signed for service.

Just to add, you have 7 working days starting the day after delivery to cancel if you were informed of your right to cancel in a durable form. If they did not inform you of this, you may have up to 3 months and 7 working days.

As above, you only have to inform them of your intent to cancel within the 7 working days. And the notice is taken as being served the day the email/letter/whatever was sent.

An RMA will be helpful and would ensure your item isn't lost in their system, however it's a not pre-requisite to returning the item to them. As long as you can ensure they've received it then you've met your obligations and they must refund you regardless. Who is the retailer?
