Hi,
Going with family for 3 weeks March-April (me/hubbie/2 teens) to Thailand. Have flights and hotel booked in Bankok. (Booked with Virgin using Tesco Clubcard vouchers). We only plan staying in Bankok for about week and want to go to one of islands. Any recommendations or tips for what to see/avoid?

Hi I think a week in Bangkok is too long, but thats my opinion.
Have you considered taking the train to 'bridge over the river Kwai' http://kanchanaburi.sawadee.com/
Great place and the best 7 tired water fall in the world that you can climb!! The train journey is really nice to get there.
Sit in the back carriage its open and has a lovely feal to it.
I have been to several islands and my fav is koh lanta http://krabi.sawadee.com/
The above web site is very handy for research.
Have a great time.....you wont want to come back...0 -
I agree that a week is too long in Bangkok - it's just too big and busy and another city. There's lots you can do a couple of hours out of Bangkok.
This is a GREAT site on Bangkok

Hi,
I too am about to book Thailand with Virgin ( so will watch this thread carefully) , but can I ask how you booked 3 weeks with only 1 weeks accomodation? Will the other 2 weeks be booked independantly of virgin?
If so this seems a good way as I understand hotels are cheap to book when you are there /on internet before going.
Thanks
BestymanOn the internet you can be anything you want. It`s strange so many people choose to be rude and stupid.0 -

Why are you booking with Virgin out of interest ? To use vouchers ? If not, then I recommend booking it independantly. How long you going for and where do you fancy ?****************************0 -
Recommend staying in Bophut Beach in Koh Samui, it is quieter but easy to get to anywhere on the island. We stayed at the Waterfront in Bophut Beach run by an English couple who really do look after you it is right on the beach, accommodation mainly in Beach Bungalows, they pick you up at the Airport, Free DVD Library etc., even has the Telegraph faxed through every day.Fluffy_Bunny wrote:Hi,

We have vouchers from Tesco and will be using these on Tesco Deals. As far as I know only Virgin nad Cosmos take Tesco deals.
I realise that they are not the cheapest, thats why I was interested in the OP possibly extending it independantly .
And before you ask "YES" I did do a lot of shopping ;o)On the internet you can be anything you want. It`s strange so many people choose to be rude and stupid.0 -

We booked flights and room only Bankok for the whole 3 weeks' holiday as had so many tescos vouchers to use and I think couldn't just book just flights with Virgin using vouchers. Seems extravagant as won't be using for most of stay but worked out cheaper than booking 4 adult flights then looking for accommodation. We may book hotel at another island - wherever we choose beforehand or wait till we get out there, just wanted recommendations of islands.0 -
If you've got quite a long time and have teenagers you might want to consider Chiang Mai in the North (easily accessible by cheap flights or overnight train). This is a hill tribe region and very different to Bangkok and the islands. I went there a few years ago and did a 3-day jungle trek and two days in the town. Fantastic night markets.
As for the islands, I'd agree that Samui is great. Chaweng is the main drag and Lamai the next bay along - it's northern end is quieter. Take a Bangkok Air flight rather than a 11 hour coach and ferry!
I've not been but I've heard good things about Koh Chang - it's much quieter and 'undiscovered' - as Samui used to be years ago.0 -
Hi My husband and I went to Thailand for a month last Oct --- really wonderful. Stayed in New Siam 11 Guest House just off the Ko Sahn Road cant recommmend it too highly if you want budget accomodation which is clean air-conditioned safe and with swimming pool. Near enough to the sights to catch the river taxis which saved us so much time and money. Our best find was a guide called Nok, a charming Thai girl who looked sfter us by inches. She only charges about £7.50 a day and showed us so much. Can recommend Hua Hin on the coast especially a resort called the Baan Tallay Dao a small boutique hotel right on the beach which was very reasonable but the service was excellent . Then we wen to Phi Phi Dom -- a real youngsters paradise.Try and do a good deed every day.0
