Royal Mail compensation for stress and time?

I sent my Visa application along with passports for family, bank statements and many other original documents by Royal Mail Special Delivery on 18 January 2012. When I checked the delivery status after few days it was showing that the package is progressing through their network so I called the customer services and they gave me an incident number. After that I called them many times, sent emails, tweets and the only reply I was getting that we are investigating and you'll be contacted soon. Just yesterday, I finally received a call from someone from RM who confirmed that the package has been lost and they will send a letter confirming it.

Now I'm very much under stress as I dont know what to do. Someone has advised me that after receiving the letter from RM, I have to report it to police and then apply for new passports and than send a new Visa application.

This is a time consuming process and also I have to pay quite a lot for new passports and arranging many other documents. The documents got lot of personal information including bank and card details and many other things so I dont know what to do.

Can I get any compensation for the stress, money and time. Any advice plz?

You can claim for the value of the items lost. If you got consequential loss cover when you sent it, you may be entitled for additional compensation. This will have to be quantifiable though, you cannot claim for 'stress'

  • Thanks for the reply Darksun. But what if I didn't purchase any consequential cover as nobody told me about it or asked about the package detail at postoffice when I posted it.

Then that's unfortunate. You should have made enquiries.

to be fair, the Royal Mail is going to have to cough for new passports (which will be valid longer than the ones they lost) so you will have a consequential benefit, whilst not monetary in direct terms it is at least a minor bonus on what is a pretty poor situation

as said, consequential loss is an extra and wouldn't cover 'stress'

Looks like you get cover up to £500 by default which should cover the cost of replacing the lost documents but obviously not compensate for the stress and hassle caused, not to mention the possible exposure to identity fraud if they fall into the wrong hands.
