BT Infinity or stick with O2?

  • Macman I would have though that on O2 he would be already on ADSL2 via their kit in the exchange. The speed estimates of 4-12meg make me think that he is. Also I dont think O2 do the allrounder package on connect.

Barry - as Macman has raised it, have you put your details into the sky website, if so what speeds did they estimate?

In the mean time it looks like you got two options £20 per month on O2, or £28 on Infinity. One has speed the other more bandwidth, dont know what the T+Cs say regards to overshooting the 40GB cap, might be worth a look.

My comment in regards to the lenght of the 18 month contract was based upon an estimate that in 12 months time both O2 and Sky will have there fibre products out in the market, otherwise they will start to hemerage customers. Admittely it would be hard to estimate how long it would be before secondary providers got their kit into your exchange, but expect both of them to undercut BT.

On seperate point have you considered plusnet (if they are available in your area) they are owned by BT, so use standard equipment in the exchange yet strangely cheaper and they also do fibre, line rental for £26 per month with 40gb download, 18 month contract.

According to samknows that exchange is not going to have ADSL2+ until 31/8. It's currently ADSL Max only. Nothing to do with it being LLU'd for o2.
I agree, if the OP wants fibre, look at Plusnet, as the prices will always be less than BT for exactly the same thing-so the unlimited option will be more affordable.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Thanks guys, i checked and sky is available.
    It hadnt been before.
    BB & phone is £19.75 with estimated speeds 9.6Mbps - 16.4Mbps
i think ill go with that as it means getting sky anytime+ as well!

I'd go with Plusnet over BT as they usually are slightly cheaper and their customer services are based in the UK.

Don't O2 do some rather extreme traffic shaping and throttling on nearly all their bundles aside from the top end one?

Good choice and you get truly unlimited allowance as well and no throttling at peak times as far as I am aware.

if you want FTTC, then why restrict yourself to BT? Any BT reseller should be able to offer you the same, but cheaper. Have you looked at Plusnet FTTC?

Is it just the non-LLU ISPs who can offer FTTC ? Plusnet (other than BT) are the only ISP I have seen offering FTTC services so far.

I am currently on Sky LLU (and they have the line rental as well). Presumably, without potentially paying a reconnect fee to go back to BT then FTTC is a no go at the moment ? I know Sky were asking for trialists many months ago but have heard nothing since.

Partially answering my own question but Sky are to launch 40mbps fibre for £20pm :D

Slightly under hand tactics Infinitty is a brand name of BT otherwise known as FTTC. "Only available on Infinitty"

There are a few other FTTC providers i have been with one for 9 months and came from O2 LLU for two years.

Not entirely accurate but gives a decent outlook on what ISP offer FTTC here. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?authkey=CNDi0Z8L&key=0AquiMM6uTUUzdHl4RGRZcnE1WWw0SVlLcVlzQWZuVFE&hl=en&authkey=CNDi0Z8L#gid=0
