I'm 50 (sorry, beyond the 40 mark
) and my particular bugbear is that there is a general assumption that as you get older, you get richer. In short, this hasn't been my experience. The consequence is that the clothes shops aimed at people of my age are usually really expensive by my standards, while the ones within my price range sell mainly clothes I couldn't wear and wouldn't suit me.
In particular, I like skirts rather than trousers (apart from jeans, which I'm not allowed to wear at work), but most of the skirts are so short that I'd look ridiculous in them - or at least that's been the case until recently. Maxis look great but are impractical and would look completely out of place in my office. I'm thankful for the midi revival. Maybe I should stock up.Life is mainly froth and bubble

I wear a mix of stuff from charity shops with stuff from Primark and Asda. I like some of the cheap basics and I get nice classics from charity shops to put with them. I also don't worry too much about seasonal trends. I know what colours and silhouettes suit me and I look for things that will work on me.:beer:0

I buy from Primark, Debenhams, New Look, Matalan and find the occasional item in BHS, M&S (do admit to loving some of the Per Una stuff, but way too expensive!) and Next. Odd bits from the supermarkets!0

Thanks everyone! This has been Really interesting to read!
The same shops keep coming up a lot I have never heard of or tried before. I have made a list of your suggestions and will start looking to see what's out there. For some reason I still find it easier looking at a catalogue made of real paper (!) Than trawlling through a web site, nothing better than a cold winter afternoon snuggled up with a blanket, a coffee and a nice catalogue, even if just 'window' shopping!
Somehow looking at a screen just isn't the same!
I have gone off trudging round the shops, get fed up with stores never having my size or limited selections, but I may have to take a day off soon, bite the bullet and get out there.
I was out of work for some time and my clothes consisted of jeans and fleeces mostly, now i am working its smarter jeans and nice tops I need. The office is freezing until early afternoon when it finally warms up so any suggestions for good places for quality knitwear that won't look like a dish rag after a couple of wears would be good too!!!! I bought a cardi from matalan last winter and after a couple of washes it went bobbly and out of shape, had to throw it out, i don't seem to get on well with acrylic stuff. Boden looks nice but the 6ft 6 posh very upper middle class looking models put ne right off, bit out of my price range. Ditto jigsaw will have to look at the other suggesrions you all have mentioned, wish me luck!!!0 -

Good luck hun:) I would just like to second the above it really is all about what suits your shape and sticking to it with variations, knowing this will give you confidence to buy stuff from cheaper places, either shops or CS or markets without even trying it on, if your not sure of your shape find a celeb who is roughly the same shape/size as you and check out what they wear and then adjust it to suit your taste, shopping is fun:D don't be intimidated by models who have to pin clothes at the back to make them fit, your the customer without you (and all of us) none of these shops etc would survive:)Thank you for this site MartinThe time for change has comeGood luck for the future0
