Tesco do some very smelly sandwich pastes in little jars very cheaply (tesco value range) - these might work.
Dizziblonde if you could of seen me sat there holding his mouth shut, stroking his neck, blowing in his nose whilst he was staring at me blankly as if to say "you stupid woman theres no way i'm swallowing". then vet suggested putting both fingers over his nostrils as this makes them gulp - it worked sort of, then i just stopped holding his mouth shut etc and he swallowed straight away - they're not stupid are they!

I put the tablet in something soft (butter usually) open cats mouth and hold his head back until it glides down. Only had to give him his tablets twice so far and he put up a bit of a fight but it worked. Luckily his medication from being neutered is liquid and I mix it in his food.

HOW TO GIVE A CAT A PILL

    1. Pick cat up and cradle it in the crook of your left arm as if holding a baby. Position right forefinger and thumb on either side of cat’s mouth and gently apply pressure to cheeks while holding pill in right hand. As cat opens mouth pop pill into mouth. Allow cat to close mouth and swallow.
    2. Retrieve pill from floor and cat from behind sofa. Cradle cat in left arm and repeat process.
    3. Retrieve cat from bedroom, and throw soggy pill away.
    4. Take new pill from foil wrap, cradle cat in left arm holding rear paws tightly with left hand. Force jaws open and push pill to back of mouth with right forefinger. Hold mouth shut for a count of 10.
    5. Retrieve pill from goldfish bowl and cat from top of wardrobe. Call spouse from garden.
    6. Kneel on floor with cat wedged firmly between knees. Hold front and rear paws. Ignore low growls emitted by cat. Get spouse to hold head firmly with one hand while forcing wooden ruler into mouth. Drop pill down ruler and rub cat’s throat vigorously.
    7. Retrieve cat from curtain rail, get another pill from foil wrap. Make note to buy new ruler and repair curtains. Carefully sweep shattered figurines and vases from hearth and set to one side for gluing later.
    8. Wrap cat in large towel and get spouse to lie on cat with head just visible from below armpit. Put pill in end of drinking straw, force mouth open with pencil and blow down drinking straw.
    9. Check the label to make sure pill not harmful to humans, drink glass of water to take taste away. Apply Band-Aid to spouse’s forearm and remove blood from carpet with cold water and soap.
    10. Retrieve cat from neighbour’s shed. Get another pill. Place cat in cupboard and close door onto neck to leave head showing. Force mouth open with dessert spoon. Flick pill down throat with elastic band.
    11. Fetch screwdriver from garage and put cupboard door back on hinges. Apply cold compress to cheek and check records for the date of last tetanus jab. Throw T-shirt away and fetch new one from bedroom.
    12. Ring Fire Brigade to retrieve cat from tree across the road. Apologise to neighbour who crashed into fence while swerving to avoid the cat. Take last pill from foil wrap.
    13. Tie cat’s paws to rear paws with garden twine and bind tightly to leg of dining table, find heavy duty pruning gloves from shed. Push pill into mouth followed by large piece of fillet steak. Hold head vertically and pour 2 pints of water down throat to wash pill down.
    14. Get spouse to drive you to Casualty, sit quietly while doctor stitches fingers and forearm and removes pill remnants from right eye. Call furniture shop on way home to order new table.
    15. Arrange for RSPCA to collect cat and ring local pet shop to see if they have any hamsters. ....

HOW TO GIVE A DOG A PILL 16. Wrap it in bacon (sound familiar, anyone?)

A friend of mine gave me a tip

crush the tablet and mix with butter, smear it on cats back leg, cat will then lick it off.

I haven't tried it but she has two cats and said it worked. Going to give it a go next time.

Requires having a cat with a back leg! Mine's one short of a 4 pack!

  • Froglet, many thanks for posting that - hilarious. Been there many times, it never gets any easier - especially when you see a vet do it in a split second and you can't believe how easy it looks.

It is funny reading these reactions - even though I know it's a problem - it never ceases to amaze me how canny they are. When murphy had to have a tablet and it was mixed in his big bowl of food, however small the tablet was, in a licked clean bowl there was always a little white pill in the bottom - god knows how he did it. You've really got to one step ahead all the time.

a cheese slice!! The value ones are great for hiding a crushed tablet - and cheese is such a treat for her I get away with it every time :)

Milky way has always worked for us, but ours have only ever had short term meds and only one or two at a time. I could imagine Milky Way would be a problem for lots of tabs every day - but it might be useful in rotation with other treats.

Ive only had to give my one dog medication up to now but i pick her up and sit her on a specific chair. When she is on this chair she knows whats coming. I normally have to wait till she opens her month slightly and i poke my fingers (and the tablet) in from the side of her mouth as far back in her mouth as far as i can whilst tipping her nose upright. It generally goes down that way. I then give her chin a little tickle.

    ps do dogs have chins?
