Hi All,

I don't know if this is posted in the right place but I need to change the battery on my 2002 Peugeot 206 (2L Diesel LX HDi), I have had to jump start it every day for the last 2 weeks with the cold weather. The car has a trip computer and I don't know if disconnecting and connecting a new battery will affect the information stored in the trip (ie. mileage, service indicator etc.)
I have read a few forums and keep seeing something about BSi and to be honest have no idea what that means or how to go about changing the battery without doing it incorrectly and having the car not start on me.

Can someone help me with how to change the battery without totally screwing the car up??

**Also I know the basics about car but I really have no idea what all the abbreviations mean so if it could be explained in simple terms that would be fab :-)**

Thanks, Ren

  • BSI is the unit on Peugeot/Citroen cars which stores the mileage information. It will retain the mileage even if it is disconnected from a power source as it has non-volatile memory. Bear in mind the mileage is also stored in the clocks themselves.

    Changing the battery is EXTREMELY unlikely to have any effect (there are rare cases where electrical surges can kill the BSI unit and thus require a replacement), remember thousands of cars have batteries replaced every year especially in the winter.

    I changed the battery in my old Peugeot 306 HDi and it was fine.

    It wasn't a Peugeot, but when I changed the battery on my car the stereo asked for a code before it would work again.
    If you don't know the code, before disconnecting the battery, check if you can set the code without needing to know the old one.

    Order your battery online, save a small fortune and fit it yourself for free.

    As long as you have your radio code it's a simple job..... Open the bonnet, turn off the ignition, hit your unlock button on the fob (so the alarm doesn't go nuts) and swap it out. Just be careful with your polarities..... (Red to +, Black to -)
    Always disconnect the Black (-) first, and reconnect it last.

    It's advisable to wear safety glasses when connecting/disconnecting car batteries and remember there's often a spark from the terminals if you don't use terminal grease (most people don't have this stuff at home).

    Peugeot will change between £15 and £45 for a radio code, so if you don't have it I advise calling dealerships up/down the country to get the best price. They just look it up on their system using your reg number.

    Not always true. I got a battery for my 206 for the same price form a local independent motor factor as the online battery sites. Just avoid the chains like Halfords.

    I didn't need a radio code either. It just worked straight away.

    I don't trust em, the one around the corner tried to sell my neighbour a battery for her MK3 Escort for £95, the same battery online was £40.

    I dare say some are good/reasonable, but there are enough rip off merchants out there, that people just don't give em a chance anymore.

    Thanks for all your advice, I think I will save monies and buy the battery online and fit myself!!
    I have actually changed the stereo in my car from it's factory fitted radio to an Alba one my partner got me for Christmas, will this still need the stereo code?
    Sorry I'm not particularly savvy with the runnings of cars!

    Thanks again, Ren
  • Also does anyone know which battery I will need?

    Looks like you need an 027 type, look for any markings that suggest this number and/or check these measurements against your current battery, if correct then it's an 027.

    Length = 243 mm
    Width = 175 mm
    Height = 190 mm

    I used the Tayna online store for my last battery.

    Right sorted!! Bought an 027 Varta 12V 60Ah for just over £60 inc p&p (not too bad really) and will hopefully fit it by the end of the week I have printed off a load of forum advice on how to fit the battery so I don't go and do something I shouldn't!! Thanks for all your help everyone, I will let you know how it goes!!

    Any advice on fitting the battery to add to my little file? :-)
