Help With Faulty Persona Contraceptive Monitor Please

Hi,

I own and have used a Persona Monitor in the past but when my relationship ended I packed up the monitor in a drawer and didn't touch it for approx 3 years.

I am in a new relationship and have decided to use the monitor again. I reset the monitor according to the instructions and everything did as it was supposed to. I pressed the 'm' button on day 1 of my cycle and checked my monitor every day and found a green light on days 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 of my cycle. Today was day 6 and I was expecting to have to do a urine sample. When I switched on my monitor I got a number 6 with the book symbol next to it which according to the instruction manual means I had to phone the help line (which I have done).

I have been told that day 6 with a book symbol means that my monitor is faulty. I was told that either my batteries had leaked or that my monitor had been dropped or had got wet. Well I know for a fact none of those things have occured. I was basically told that I need to purchase a new monitor! I am furious because I know my monitor has not been damaged or tampered with in any way and I have just spent £45 on test sticks!

Does anybody know if the care line are just fobbing me off to get me to spend money on a new monitor or can anything be done when you get a day 6 with the book symbol? I have probably owned my persona monitor for 10 years but I don't see how it can just 'break' when nothing has happened to it and it worked fine last time I used it.

Has anyone else had a similar experience? Do I really have to spend £60 on a new monitor? Is it right that it can just become faulty all by itself and can I ask for it to be repaired or replaced?

Any help would be gratefully received. Thank you.

You're thinking about having unprotected sex with someone you've just met and your only concern is why the monitor hasn't lasted longer?

Sorry, but you should be more concerned about sexual health or unplanned pregnancy.

My question was about the fault on my monitor and not about whether I'm having safe sex or risking an unwanted pregnancy!

When I said I'm in a new relationship I didn't mean that I have literally just met someone. We have been together for several months and without wishing to go into details, STI's and unwanted pregnancy are not an issue.

The persona monitor is a perfectly safe method of contraception if used properly and I used it with no problems at all in a previous long-term relationship.

I would appreciate an answer to my question and less judgemental comments from people who don't know my full circumstances. Thank you.

I would have thought 10 years was a reasonable life span for it?

Yes, I think I probably have owned it for 10 years but it hasn't been used for a while and was stored safely in a padded bag in the back of my drawer. I don't know how it can just develop a fault without something happening to it, and surely a product designed for something as important as contraception should not just randomly develop a fault!

I was wondering if the day 6 with the book symbol is a genuine fault that cannot be rectified or whether they are just trying to get me to stump up another £60 unnecessarily?

Has anyone else had the same error symbol on their monitor?
  • Electronics can break down from being damp at some time, or just the wiring dies.
I'm assuming you did not leave batteries in.
    10 years seems pretty good.

i dont know the monitor but 10 years is a pretty good life for electronics,

and as has been pointed out unless you have kept in in a box with something like the silica gel packs which you replaced every now and then, then moisture in the air can quite easily get into it,
    Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)
