Watch out for Hellmanns

I've never seen before..
Hellmann's Salad Mayo 350G reduced from 1.69 to £1
Poundland www.poundland.co.uk0 -
We had a squeezy bottle once when it was on offer but went back to the jars.
The Tesco own brand is ok, I got it to try when Hellmans wasn't on offer anywhere. The ingredients are in theory the same but the taste isn't, somehow, it's very bland.
Now though I buy Lidl's, Vita D'or; far cheaper than Hellmans and the nearest in taste and texture, really impressive.0 -
As we are slight mayonnaise snobs we don't like cheap label so always buy Hellmanns but when it's on offer. We like to price compare to get the cheapest deal but were amazed to find that the jars are in grams but the squeezy bottles in mls. So how do you price compare? I queried it with Hellmanns and got this reply....
Unfortunately the Real Mayonnaise in the Jars and the Squeezy Mayonnaise are 2 different products as the squeezy one has to have more fluid added to it to allow it to be squeezed out of the bottles.
The Real Mayonnaise in the jars is spooned out and so far less fluid is added to it so it can be weighed in grams. The squeezy one is a fluid so is weighed in ml.
So it seems if it contains more fluid, it is a different product from true "Real Mayonnaise" but does not say that on the label. You are paying for a watered down product for the convenience of having it in a plastic bottle, so we have gone back to the jars. Caveat Emptor indeed!
There are other fluids beside water.
They probably sheer the mayo are other processing method to make it more runny as the ingredients decs are very similar.0 -
Just spotted on Iceland website
Hellmann's Real Mayonnaise 800g 33% free save 25p 2.50 34.4p/100g
Hellmann's Light Mayonnaise 800g 33% free save 25p 2.50 34.4p/100g

As terra_ferma correctly points out 1g of water = 1ml.
In post #4 from the hellmans jar and squeezy themselves, one teaspoon is 14g for the jar and 15ml for the squeezy. So if my calculations are correct, 100g = 107.1ml and 100ml = 93.3g
Edit: Just noticed Tesco sell both the jar and the squeezy in ml.

I didn't think of checking on mysupermarket:
100g: 722cal
http://www.mysupermarket.co.uk/#/sainsburys-price-comparison/mayonnaise_and_dressings/hellmanns_real_mayonnaise_800g.html
100ml: 668cal

Which probably means that mayo is lighter than water (probably because of more air in it - just a guess, but what liquid would be lighter than water?).
Therefore the prices per 100ml astronomical when it's converted in grams.
Or if the explanation of the difference in calories is also due to the ingredients (more diluted) it means you are buying an inferior products anyway.
Regardless of the reason, squeezy Hellmans is much more expensive than people (including me until now) realise.
I will reconsider my choices next time I shop...0 -
If you want to make mayonnaise more runny, then you would need to add a little more oil, not water. Water would change the characteristics of the emulsion, and could possibly make the mayonnaise thicker, not more runny.0
