Watch out for Hellmanns

As we are slight mayonnaise snobs we don't like cheap label so always buy Hellmanns but when it's on offer. We like to price compare to get the cheapest deal but were amazed to find that the jars are in grams but the squeezy bottles in mls. So how do you price compare? I queried it with Hellmanns and got this reply....

Unfortunately the Real Mayonnaise in the Jars and the Squeezy Mayonnaise are 2 different products as the squeezy one has to have more fluid added to it to allow it to be squeezed out of the bottles.

The Real Mayonnaise in the jars is spooned out and so far less fluid is added to it so it can be weighed in grams. The squeezy one is a fluid so is weighed in ml.

So it seems if it contains more fluid, it is a different product from true "Real Mayonnaise" but does not say that on the label. You are paying for a watered down product for the convenience of having it in a plastic bottle, so we have gone back to the jars. Caveat Emptor indeed!

OK, so I've got both the squeezy and a jar here, the ingredients for both are:

    Squeezy
Vegetable Oil (77%), Water, Pasteurised Free Range Egg and Yolk (8%), Spirit Vinegar, Salt, Sugar, Lemon Juice, Flavouring, Antioxidant (Calcium, Disodium EDTA), Paprika Extract.

    Jar
Vegetable Oil (77%), Water, Pasteurised Free Range Egg and Yolk (8%), Spirit Vinegar, Salt, Sugar, Lemon Juice, Flavouring, Antioxidant (Calcium, Disodium EDTA), Paprika Extract.

If they are adding more fluid to the squeezy one, what are they adding? As the percentages of the Vegetable oil and Eggs are the same, are they using less of one/some of the other ingredients and adding more water?

Maybe someone smarter than me can work it out. Or maybe they are just pulling the wool over our eyes.

Edit: Thought I would post the Nutrition Information, as they were slightly different. Then realised I could not compare them as they are per 100g and 100ml :rotfl:
  • I realised the difference when I bought the squeezy one to try. There is def more liquid and it changes the formula of the mayo so that it is not quite right. Its like making a cake but say you didn't incorporate the butter well enough. Its has all the same ingredients in the same amounts yet since they are not mixed in properly you get a not very nice cake.

Also on the labels of both are "Guideline Daily Amounts" with "Each teaspoon" 14g for the jar and 15ml for the squeezy. So if my calculations are correct, 100g = 107.1ml and 100ml = 93.3g.

Squeezy Guideline Daily Amounts (per teaspoon)
    Calories 100
    Sugars 0.2g
    Fat 11.0g
    Saturates 1.0g
    Salt 0.2g

Jar Guideline Daily Amounts (per teaspoon)
    Calories 100
    Sugars 0.2g
    Fat 11.0g
    Saturates 0.9g
    Salt 0.2g

Only difference here is the Saturates, 0.1g less in the jar.
  • I don't much like the squeezy version,it's runny, splatters all over when nearing the end and without cutting it open you can't get at the last bit.Back to the jars for me.

After thorough cleaning, I have refilled sqeezy with mayo from jar without any ill effects. I would only refill once though.
  • I begrudge paying more for a squeezy bottle but I do sometimes wonder if it's false economy if using it on salads, if you use a spoon you get big splodges and I end up not eating it all whereas with a squeezy bottle you can control the amount you use more easily.

I lurve Hellmann's mayo. It's not worth me making it when Hellmann's tastes so good. I hadn't tried the squeezy version and thanks to the advice I really don't think I will do !

If you're a mayo snob, may I recommend Sainsbury's French mayonnaise (not the light version); surprisingly enough it's even better than Hellmans.

Well, the absolute best mayo I have had is also French actually, from Benedicta. I haven't found it here yet though.

Back to the liquid/more/less liquid issue I'd imagine they'd not add anything but maybe keep churning it to make it more liquidised. If you were to do this with a tin of chopped tomatos you'd end up with a puree. Not 100% on this, its just hazarding a guess. I think they'd need to state anything added on the label.
