Asus Aspire 1 BSOD

Hi all

I've been asked to look at a friends netbook because it won't boot.
It tries to load Windows (XP), gives a BSOD for about 1 second and then reboots.
I've tried all the usual options (Safe Mode, Safe Mode with networking, Safe Mode with Command Prompt and Last Known Good) but still the same error.

I can't seem to disable to automatic restart (or even get to the option) so I can check the code(s).

Anyone any ideas?

Whats the BSOD Mesage (0x000000nn)? If you can force the system to shut down before you get the bsod, may take 3-4 attempts, you can force the XP start-up menu with the option to turn off the automatic restart.

Have you tried the XP Recovery Console? Need to boot from a usb drive (cd drive or pen drive).........

I need to disable the auto restart but I'm struggling to get to the option to turn it off.

Not sure how long after you boot that the message appears, the best way to get the boot menu to appear is to force a shutdown as soon as the Windows logo appears by pressing the on/off button. You may have to do this 2-3 times.

I've done a bit more digging and apparently I need to get to the Advanced Boot Options to find that bit.
Any ideas on how I get to that or can it be done with the instructions already posted (I'm at work so I can't test it)?

Managed to get the error code and it's as follows:-
    PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED AREA

    And the Stop code is:-
    0x00000050 (0xbb72b92b,0x00000000,0xf7512405,0x00000002)

From a quick Google, it looks like a faulty memory module but can anyone shed any more like please?

    ::edit::

If ot helps, the file it specifies is volsnap.sys

The TDSS rootkit has a variant that infects volsnap.sys

    http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/Threat/Encyclopedia/Entry.aspx?Name=Virus%3AWin32%2FAlureon.K

I installed that particular TDSS rootkit on a test machine and got endless BSoD's - Can't remember the stop code though.

I used puppy linux to replace the copy in system32\drivers with another copy (dll cache? - cant remember)

Also dealt with it here: http://forums.v3.co.uk/showthread.php?t=218619&page=2

Hi Unfortunately I have found that BSOD 50 covers many sins..
    Please try Waddler’s suggestions.
Anything else really requires an alternative booting device eg a usb cd drive or bootable flash drive
You would need this to download and run the memtest R|AM check.
You would also need this to use XP’s remote console to check if a software error and/or restore the registry, and if necessary re-install windows.
Before I write-up this please let us know if you can get access to the relevant hardware to do this.

Waddler_8 - Thanks for the info. Will Hirens Boot CD run from a flash drive and will it be any good? I've also made an Ubuntu(?) memory stick and booted from that before now. Would that be any good?

Robmar0se - I've got a couple of flash-drives. Not sure how I would run a "mini" Windows from it or anything else, but all help greatly appreciated.
