Best way to...

.....connect to a router by ethernet cable from a distance of about 35ft?
Router can't be moved. Elderly relative would be looking to connect a Sony BDP-S185 to the router as the player doesn't have built in wifi. It would be for streaming from Lovefilm only.

Thanks

Well ethernet cable would be the cheapest option but then you have the problem of an exposed cable trailing over the floor unless you could either run it under the carpet against the skirting board or route it up inside a wall and then across the attic space and down inside the other wall where the tv is located.

If you want to spend a bit more money then a pair of homeplugs would be easier to install.
  • You may have to make your own or have one made , but cheaper and better than other options, Speed is the most obvious advatnage , look for Cat5e/6 cables at the length you want on google
eg http://www.amazon.co.uk/Belkin-Cat6-Snagless-Patch-Cable/dp/B0001DHHKC but you could probably get cheaper

Crikey, what's the difference between the £94.60 one and the £4.80 one on ebay?
    Don't say £89.80 :D

Hi mrs ccleudo - just to assure you, homeplugs are very simple, they come in pairs each with its own cable. There is NO configuration you just plug one into the mains near the router and connect the cable to a spare slot on the router. The other one into another mains socket near the PC/lappie and plug the cable into the ethernet socket on the pc/lappie. There is absolutely no configuration required at all.

Might save accidents, tripping over wires etc. Very neat and tidy. Recommend them, use them myself too (used to have unsightly wires trailing over the place).

Hi again Rob, this seems to be my techie week ;)
Would he get as good a signal via the Homeplugs tho? ie I have given him a laptop set up for lovefilm but the signal in the room he is in is usually "low" or "very low" and he gets impatient with the buffering and gives up in frustration. I felt that an Ethernet cable might give him a better signal than homeplugs.....

Also, there wouldn't be a pc/lappie...just the Sony BDP-S185 player.
