Nonsense.
You don't have to find then use the "cheapest" of 3 quotes at all!
You are entitled to have your car repaired at your choice of garage.
Exactly, the 3 quotes is purely to show that the prices are reasonable and not just a mate down the pub doing it for £50 while you charge the 3rd party £400.
Happened to my ex's sister after she passed her test, she hit lightly the neighbours Renault scenic, the owner said it would cost £400 to repair, took the money and then 2 weeks later his mate (the one we saw at his barbecue in the summer), rolled up in his e-on van, buffed out the scratches, knocked out the dent from the inside and p!ssed off within 30 minutes of arriving.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

It's not up to the innocent third party to put themselves out getting multiple quotes!
If the liable third party isn't happy with the quote, then they need to discuss this with the repairer prior to giving their authorisation.
If there is anything unnacceptable, then that is the time to thrash it out!0 -
You are not entitled to have your car repaired at your choice of garage if that garage is charging over the odds for the work. You are however, free to pick a garage which will undertake the work to a professional standard and which is reasonably priced (the prices being roughly in line with other professional providers in the area).Nonsense.

The duty is yours to minimise losses by ensuring you accept work only at reasonable prices. If you are unsure of what a reasonable price is, you'll need to get multiple quotes - how else will you be able to satisfy yourself that the price is reasonable, and more importantly defend yourself against a claim that it wasn't?
Now, you say "If the liable third party isn't happy with the quote, then they need to discuss this with the repairer prior to giving their authorisation." - if you agree the repair price with them before the work begins, then fair enough, but I'm talking about getting it done without asking permission first.0 -

Obviously!
But all quotes point out there may be extras to pay once the job gets under way, so one ought to be getting the third party to instruct the garage themselves! (Not a good idea to pay for repairs yourself then start chasing a third party for the money)0 -
There's no obviously about it. If you meant you should choose a garage and then instruct the third party to liase with that garage to agree a price before work begins, then you should have said that from the beginning.Obviously!

What would you do if the third party didn't agree with the price your chosen garage quoted?
If you pressed ahead with the repairs anyway, you may as well not have asked the third party to liase with the garage at all.
If you would get other quotes to prove the price was reasonable, that would be sensible, but then you'd be following the advice to get multiple quotes, which you seem to disagree with very strongly.0 -

Why would I say that at the begining? If the third party didn't agree to instruct the garage, (and agree any extras that might turn up during the job being carried out, then all bets are off, and you go straight to the third party insurer!
(You need the third party to instruct the garage, otherwise you are faced with having to pay them yourself - then pursue the third party for your money. Not a great idea!!)
It's not for the innocent victim to go round collecting quotes - and only puts up the cost of the claim, as the victim can claim for the time and cost involved getting quotes!
(You can usually find a cheaper quote, but the issue here is getting the job done at your choice of repairer, not at the cheapest price!)0 -
im losing the will to live on this forum lately
OP caused a scrape on bonnet (who hasnt been back by the way so its probably computer generated by honest john to appear in his journal saturday with his rubbish reply)
anyway
cars owner generously got a quote of £150
and i read lots of posts about insurance, the price of linseed oil and should that boat of sunk
get real
car damaged
£150 is a bargain0 -
Because getting the third party to liase with the garage may be an idea, but it's hardly standard practice. Most private settlements are not settled in that manner. Why would I say that at the begining?
We'd be going round in circles if I carried this on, but in conclusion, there are sound reasons behind getting two or three quotes.
Edit: As I've said all along (Post #11), £150 is a reasonable price and the OP should pay it. The thread did get sidetracked...0
