how to charge 3 AAA batteries (not 2 or 4!)

    I think the op means he has a 4 battery charger and wants a way to charge only 3 batteries in it.
    I would go for post 3 as the easiest with a rotate of post 4.

    Or don't buy any more batteries

    Day 1 charge 4 batteries
    Day 2 charge 2 batteries and use the spare from day 1
    Day 3 charge 4 batteries
    Day 4 charge 2 batteries and use the spare from day 3

    etc etc

    I agree, I have a few LED lights (bike, head, normal) and just have a pot of the low discharge types. When a set die I just take some out of the pot and recharge the deads in batches when I have even numbers.
