Either way the OP is damned and may pay in one way or another. The subject of speedo alignment is rather moot because putting on larger wheels with the correctly sized tyres will have a negligible effect on speedo reading - normally around 0.5 per cent.

The best thing the OP can do is to obtain quotes online, and then call the companies up and ask what the effect of the larger alloy wheels will be. Then he will have a baseline to compare how adding the larger alloys affects the premium.

There are two routes we are suggesting the OP takes:

    (1) The don't notify/plead ignorance camp could end up costing the OP money if the car is stolen or if the alloys are damaged.

    (2) The notify camp could cost he OP nothing if the insurer agrees or there may be a small additional premium to pay.

Either way it depends on the OPs attitude to risk. Here's my story: In the early 1991 I worked for an Insurer in their claims department. We insured a40 something policyholder who had a (we thought) bog standard Impreza WRX. The guy was a petrolhead and modified the car from it's original 220bhp to around 450bhp. He had a spectacular accident whilst overtaking and hit an oncoming car. The occupants were severely injured. The Insurer paid out for the 3rd parties car and permanent disabilities. They also voided the guys policy and bankrupted him to recover what money they could from his share of his house. He'd obviously worked all his life to get his house, WRX etc. OK a bit extreme compared to a set of alloys, but do you want to take the risk?

Thank you all for the ideas..here is an update..I phoned Audi to arrange for their 7 days complimentary insurance they offer with their cars..they asked if they could quote me for the year..I agreed reluctantly as i thought they will be very expensive..I was surprised as they were very competitive (£660) when other insurers quotes were over £750. I asked politely if they can lower the permium further and they agreed £610 for an excellent cover which also guarantees repairs at Audi dealership. I asked about the wheels and they clearly said they dont count factory fitted option as a modification
