I am looking for an insurance quote for a 6 months old car I am buying. This car normally comes with 18 inch alloys as standard but the previous owner have paid for the optional 19 inch alloys. Do I need to tell the insurers about this? does it count as modification even though it was factory fitted?

Strictly speaking some insurers may count this as a modification - and some companies will try to load the premium as a result. Its worth telling them though as you don't want to get into a dispute in the event of a claim.

A guy who I work with selected the optional side skirts for his volvo and his insurance went up by 40%! In the end he had to cancel the insurance and find a different insurer.

Yes I'd tell them. Don't forget this may also affect your speedo too.

Some people will tell you no, some will say yes. Some Insurers disregard factory fitted options, others charge you to cover them. It depends on your Insurer.

Most of the time the question asked is something along the lines of: "Has the vehicle been modified from the manufacturers standard specification?"

So 19 inch alloys will be a modification based on that question.

If you insure through the Admiral Group of Insurers then beware of their Standard Parts Replacement Clause.

You may find this a problem with mods.
