www.booking.com has a wide range of choices (and reviews to see what people think). Berlin has excellent transport so you don't necessarily have to stay in Mitte - being near a relatively central S-bahn or U-bahn stop is fine.

Even over New Years we found somewhere for £50 booking at the last minute so you should be able to do better.

We stayed there, didn't have a problem with it, Free wi-fi and bottles of cold beer from a machine (sadly not free) if you wake up thirsty in the night, also just 5 mins from all the local transport connections you could want..

I just had a couple of bad experiences in the past - but that may be more of the cities I was staying it - it gave me flashbacks of student halls!!:D
  • I usually stay at the Marriott on Potsdamer Platz. Its not far to walk to most things in Mitte (apart from Alexanderplatz) and you can also walk over to the Zoo / Ku'dam in the West if you want.
Have also stayed at the Maritim on Friedrichstrasse which was a brilliant location for seeing all of Mitte.

I stayed at the Circus Hotel and it's absolutely fantastic!
I'll definitely stay there again when I go back, and if you want chepaer, then the Circus Hostel is fab too, I think they do some individual rooms too.

We stayed in Berlin last year and opted for a Pension. We stayed in the Prenzlauerberg district. We so enjoyed that area (and, like most of Berlin, it's pretty easy to get to WHERE EVER you need to go, really...) and that particular pension, that we're going back again in August and staying with them again, but this time getting an apartment. We stayed with Pension Absolut. We're staying in the apartment this time that is on the edge of Prenzlauerberg and Mitte.
  • No to Mitte! It's true that you would be close to museum island and some of the tourist sites, but the public transport here is fantastic so getting around is no problem. For a real taste of the Berlin experience either stay in Prenzlauerberg (Nr. Station Eberswalder Strasse) for a slice of cafe culture and picturesque streets, or for the more industrial side, around Friedrichshain. It's a bit grottier there in places but close to Boxhagener Platz is a really nice area, with lots of bars, restaurants etc. In Friedrichshain you can get a taste for the real Berlin, with its abandoned industrial spaces (see abandonedberlin.com to explore the ice factory for example) and waning anarchism.
Otherwise I would also recommend staying somewhere inbetween Kreuzberg or Neukoelln (close to Kottbusser Tor on U8 line). If you can find a place on either Paul Linke Ufer or Maybachufer, you can chill out along the canal in this Turkish district full of markets, great food and trendy youngsters sporting some pretty wild haircuts.
That's my advice as an expat living here. So take it or leave it. Either way, have fun! It's a great city.

I also stayed here and would definitely recommend it if the price is right, fantastic location and right outside the subway so you can easily get around the city!
