I went to see Walter Mitty tonight. Sadly I never got to see the film.

Arrived in good time (about 40 minutes early) for a 6:30pm screening. At 6:45, we were told the film would start around 7pm. At 7:15pm, we were shown two trailers. Then at 7:30pm, we were told the film would start in about 10 minutes time. I waited another 10 minutes or so, then decided to leave. Several other people also left.

The bouncers would not allow use of mobile phones at all after 6:30pm, so I had nothing to do during this time, having read the Evening Standard at least three times.

I had planned to get food at a nearby chain restaurant after the film, however they would've been closed by the time the film ended had I waited for it to start.

I appreciate that the tickets are free, but what a waste of my evening.

You should have asked to speak to a manager. They might have offered you free tickets to see another movie instead, poss on a diff day

We weren't let into our screen until 6:22. There was a huge line by that time!
  • Have to tell you glider, you missed a good film.

I was almost put off going to see The Secret Life of Walter Mitty by a post from someone who claimed it was a boring waste of time. I suspect the only boring waste of time was the poster!

This film is called a comedy, and stars Ben Stiller - all of which raise certain assumptions about how it's going to be. Never assume!

First off, this film is more wistful and sad than it is funny - there are no laugh-out loud gags, no mugging to the camera, no funny faces pulled or loud voices; the only slapstick appears in the short 'fantasy' sequences.

Ben Stiller is quite brilliant as Walter Mitty, played here as an overlooked, unassuming backroom worker in a big corporation. The famous Mitty fantasies appear when this gentle, inarticulate man, faced by situations he cannot answer, goes into a 'trance' and his huge imagination takes over. These 'absences' get him into trouble at work; his family, who also see him as a non-achiever, call it his 'zoning out'.

So far, so predictable: dull geek escapes into his imagination to avoid ugly life. But then something weird happens: Mitty starts to take chances, and suddenly his real life becomes more like the fantastic events in the fantasy. This is done so obliquely, that at first I wondered, 'is this him imagining just another fantasy?'

I won't spoil the plot for those who want to go and see what happens, but I can tell you that the cinematography was superb. The film was partly shot in Iceland, and the plot also takes in Greenland and the Himalayas. The scenery was stunning and so unusual that it added to the blurring of the lines between reality/fantasy.

This film will make you smile, but contains a lot of sadness too, courtesy of the exposition of Walter's past. It will make you wonder, and make you think. All the things a good film should do! Enjoy it - and don't forget to live a little! :-)

The epic motion picture will span Mandela’s extraordinary life journey from his childhood in a rural village through to his inauguration as the first democratically elected President of South Africa. It is a thrilling and ultimately joyous story of a good man triumphing against all odds
