Orange Pay As You Go - quick question
I've recently terminated my Orange contract and moved the number to pay as you go so I can save a bit of money. I've just been looking on the Orange website for some information about PAYG but it seems (intentionally?) vague ... how often do I need to top up to keep my number? Can I just do this as a minimum top up? Do Orange debit some credit from the account if it's not used? Do I *have* to choose one of their animals or can I stay as a "starter" customer?
I've not had much experience of PAYG before but I just want the phone for incoming calls so IMO it's pointless setting it up for unlimited text/phone/internet, paying every month by direct debit, etc. - that's just the same as a contract phone

It's not necessary to top up.3.4 We will disconnect your Device if during the previous six months, you have not Registered a new Top Up or you have not made chargeable calls from your Device or received incoming calls on your Device. For the avoidance of doubt calls shall include but not be limited to voice calls, data calls and text messaging. On disconnection your mobile telephone number will be reassigned. On Reconnection you will be assigned a new mobile telephone number. Orange may at its discretion, on request and on Reconnection to the Services, recredit the amount remaining on your account at the time it was disconnected.0

Many thanks for finding that doc for me - it's confusing though because there is a mention of disconnection if the phone isn't used...

I guess all it means is that someone needs to call my mobile phone at least once every 6 months?
I just found out how to check my balance. Orange have credited my phone when they sent me the new PAYG sim - the balance is now 1p :rotfl:0 -
Why necessarily someone? You can make a call or send a text too.
I could do but it'd need to be a very short call if I've only got 1p credit on the phone ... I don't really need to use the mobile phone (it's cheaper using my landline) so I just wanted to keep my old number and do it as cheaply as possible. ie. how long I can keep the number without topping it up or anything. If I can leave it with 1p credit and just make sure someone calls it at least every six months to keep the number active and assigned to me then that's okay... it would have been nice if this was a bit clearer on the website though.0 -
How long have you been paying on contract for a mobile that you don't use? Now you're saying that you don't want to spend 10p once every 6 months to send a text to your old granny? You're having a laugh!A bank is a place that will lend you money if you can prove you don't need it.0

Long story - it was a business phone so it was on contract but I wasn't paying for it. I have another business phone and my landline package has inclusive calls so I don't need another mobile phone... but I want to keep my old number just in case there's anyone I've forgotten to update... and what the minimum requirement is to keep the number active.
All I wanted to know is how to do this.0 -
You currently have a 1p balance?
1. Make a 10p tiny top up at an Orange shop within 6 months.
2. Then send one 10p text no longer than six months later.
Repeat annually. Total annual running cost 10p.0 -

If you have a land line then every few months ring the mobile from that and press the answer key - job done0
