As suggested by Robmar0se in post #2 I unplugged the ethernet cable, switched off router for a while then back on. Then followed instructions - results as follows
ping 127.0.0.1 - not recognised as an internal or external command
ping your router 192.168.n.n (if not sure of router IP address enter ipconfig) - command worked fine
ping www.google.co.uk (just as typed) - not recognised as an internal or external command

When you're logged in to the router, can you see the SSID of the network (the name give to your wireless connection) and can you tell if the wireless shows encryption?
If so, does it tell you if it's WEP/WPA/WPA2?
Does it tell you the wireless encryption password?Dave. :wave:0 -
I can connect to the internet wirelessly!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't understand it. I did change my LAN settings, per the manual, but didn't change anything in wireless settings.
Dazed and thoroughly confused but happy!!!
Thank you all.0 -
Hi Dave - posts crossed. I still don't understand why it's working. However, the SSID is my name, WPA2-PSK, and there is a network key password (but I don't know what it is).0

Glad its working - often by rebooting the router strange things may be resolved.
If you look at the TPlink manual you downloaded, it will tell you what the passphrase is all about - it safeguards your wireless network from third parties accessing your ISP and using yr download/upload allowance etc. Its a security thingy.....acts like a password to yr wireless network and is configured on the router, then when you join a a wireless network, ie yr name, it should ask you for the passphrase so that you can get on etc..0 -

LAN = Local Area Network. You connect to the LAN either via ethernet cable (wired) or radio connection (wireless).
Then you were connected by ethernet, the 'excellent' signal strength you saw was the wireless connection between your PC and the router. Something in the router was preventing this going the next step and connecting to the internet.
Whatever you changed on the LAN (as per the manual) is likely to be what has now allowed your wireless devices to connect to the internet. How do I add a signature?0 -
Yes, I guess it MUST have been the LAN settings. Great result!
I have to say, this techie forum is brilliant. I also got my PC running quickly, smoothly and effortlessly today thanks to Closed's helpful sticky and advice.
