Wireless connection works but only when wired!

My PC says that the wireless network is connected, signal strength excellent, but I cannot connect to the internet unless the ethernet cable is connected to the router. This has been the case since I bought the router a few months ago. It was installed and set up by a local computer shop and it worked wirelessly there with my PC. But it has never worked for me at home.

Help anyone???

    Hi..........

Try the following with the ethernet cable removed. Discontinue testing if after any action, problem is corrected.

First reset yr router by switching off. count to 10 and restart.

In yr command prompt could try the following pings

    ping 127.0.0.1

ping your router 192.168.n.n (if not sure of router IP address enter ipconfig)

    ping www.google.co.uk (just as typed)

the first tells your if your PC is okey, second the leg to yr router is okay, and thirdly whether yr PC outside Windows can connect.

try the following in this order and then reboot and retry

    ipconfig /flushdns

    netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt

    netsh winsock reset

Also what lights are on on the router - model?

In my router, (Netgear), by signing into it, I can see the router and connection status - can you see that?

Lastly make a note of yr router settings and reset yr router to manufacturer's settings (little hole in the back, blunt pin insert and count to 20). Re-enter settings as if from new.

But if you have an ethernet cable connected, you will be connecting by ethernet, not by wireless. Even though the wireless function is switched on and the network is visible.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Thank you both. I'll answer your questions before I try anything, in case that throws up something relevant.

Router: TP-Link Wireless G ADSL2+ - lights: power, asdl, internet, WLAN (I don't know how to sign into it)
    OS: Windows XP

Should I go ahead with the steps suggested?

Macman - our posts must have crossed. Does the ethernet cable connect me to the wireless network (I'm sorry, I don't know much about this stuff . . . obviously).

I know I'm sounding thick - but if I have the LAN disabled, why am I connecting OK to the internet (if not by wireless)?

With ethernet cable attached, type ipconfig into the command prompt - it should give you 192.168 something - this is your router IP address - type this number into the browser address field , ie where the www. etc goes.

You will then see the router interface - however I would first either get the manual that came with the router, this should tell you how to access the router interface - either that or goto the tplink website and download the manual.

The steps indicated won't do any harm - as long as you have the info to allow you to re-input the router settings.
  • I typed the IP address into the browser address field and got Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at 192.168.1.3

The manual I got with the router was just a set-up guide so I'll have a look for it on the net. Will keep you posted.

TP-link website says router IP address should be 192.168.1.1.

    Try that.

The first IP address in 'ipconfig' is the address of your laptop as provided by the router. The default gateway should be the router address.

192.168.1.3 maybe the wireless address - 192.168.1.1 will be the router address - try this first (or if not try possibly 192.168.1.254).

Sorry have to go out now, but as I say you can't do any harm in trying these things apart from reseting the router. The rest is harmless - but in the ipconfig/netsh commands they won't work unless you use the correct format with the relevant spacing - if you get it wrong, no harm done - it will just tell you you made a mistake!
  • Hi. I have typed the correct IP address into the web and am now on the TPlink configuration page which tells me that it has already been configured. What should I do now? Thanks!!
