Also, no seaport in either task manager or system manager to stop??

Did everything else but removing Dell Support seems to have caused it to slow down a bit and the PC is rumbling away again as if it's busy doing something.

After reboot Commit charge was 370000 ish a minute ago but is now 334372.

Are you checking the commit charge after loading firefox, it seems higher than I would expect straight after a reboot.

Check in task manager to see if any process is causing the rumbling away (does that mean the disk churning), also check the commit charge at the time, and see if any one process is using a lot of ram

If the commit charge goes over installed ram, it will slow down, a few firefox pages could cause this.

seaport and all the other things seem to have gone, so the log is fairly clean, what things now show as ticked in msconfig, startup, the lexmark entry should show up

have you checked the price of a ram upgrade, do you have the windows reinstallation cd, or does the machine have a factory restore partition, and do you backup?

  • Hi Closed. It's actually running very nicely now - nice and quiet again so I'm not sure why it seemed so busy last night. The Commit charge now is 356540 with just Firefox running. I know you say that's high but everything has speeded up beautifully since all changes & removals. I really can't complain!

Only 3 things on startup in msconfig : Avast, WLTRay and Synpatics (?).

No I don't back up and I haven't look at the cost of new RAM. Do you really think I need it (the RAM) or is that just in case the Commit charge gets too high?

    Still have all installation discs.

I'm quite happy to leave things the way they are though - I'm so pleased - I thought I was going to have to buy a new computer because this one was just such a pain to work with. You've worked wonders.

If you are happy with the performance then you don't need more ram, but a backup would be advisable assuming you have any useful data on there, a system image backup would enable you to restore data and windows should the hard disk fail
