I have just listed some items and have not accepted payal becuase of the high charges I have incurred lately! I didn't think some of the items would sell for so much! and as the items were my little sisters I didn't want to charge her the fees! I hope this new loada stuff will sell!!

Cheques are not entirely safe which is why I don't like accepting them. I always try to push bank transfers and paypal over cheques.
Cheques do not technically bounce after they are cleared but they can be recalled for a variety of reasons, I had one recalled after 6 weeks in my account as the words and figures did not match exactly. Neither I nor the bank had noticed which is why it had gone through my account successfully.
There has been a lot of press recently about the dangers of cheques but I note in a recent Mail on Sunday the financial writer, Tony Hetherington, mentioned the possibility of a new code coming in later this year which would actually put a confirmed 'cleared' date on cheques. This would save all these problems as after the confirmed date the banks would have to bear the cost of any cheques being reversed or recalled.
Personally I don't like cheques purely because i have had several problems with them being recalled or bounced after I had sent out goods, however I know that if I was one of those who had problems with paypal then I would probably be moaning baout them too. As it is I have never had any problems as a buyer or seller with paypal and as paypal accounts for about 99% of my transactions I think that is pretty good odds.

Party_Animal wrote:Thanks CQ. I thought I'd been careful as both sellers had long histories and 100% feed back. They'd both sold similar items before. What else do I look for?
Sorry you've had such bad luck but buying/selling on Ebay holds inherant risks, and there are no guarantees that a transaction will be 100% safe, so it's a case of caveat emptor I'm afraid
All you can do is to take the necessary steps to minimise such risk ... i.e checking feedback/other auctions/ID's etc ... and in some cases there does appear to be some form of protection available to buyers/sellers, but in my experence eBay/Paypal don't give a toss about their customers

Angel, it will be interesting to know how you get on.
About a year ago as an experiement I listed a load of things very cheaply and without paypal but most didn't sell. The stuff I did sell was mainly sci fi mags and books which went to students (so many addresses that were Halls of residence!!) and they all paid in postal orders.

Yes I will let you know,
I would have thought students wouldn't have sent PO's as you have to pay more to get them!!

Well done thats excellent. I had one that like a few weeks ago when it was the 5p listing's day. It was no extra to list my items as buy it now than a normal auction as the £1.50 charge was not in force that day. Anway to get to the point someone snapped up 1 of my items within hours of listing it and then for the remaining time left of the 10 days nobody else bought another.0 -

Out of interest what payments methods are you offering for overseas buyers? I could never find another method of payment that really worked and my post is too bad to suggest cash, however well concealed.

I think paypal is the only thing. I've had great success with quite a lot of interest from all over the place. I have posted items to Sweden, Italy, Canada, USA, Holland, Belgium, Ireland & France.0
