I'm very confused about my friend's entitlement

Have they actually claimed?
I believe you can back-date a claim for 3 months from when you first apply. In which case they may as well apply now.0 -

They have been claiming the one-child rate of £4,245. The second child is due in 4 weeks.Mortgage | £145,000Unsecured Debt | [strike]£7,000[/strike] £0 Lodgers | |0 -
Haha, people only reply when they think I'm being a !!!!! :rotfl:
Seriously - everyone who said "She can only get CTC", please explain why? Why can't she get the "Combined WTC and CTC"?Mortgage | £145,000Unsecured Debt | [strike]£7,000[/strike] £0 Lodgers | |0 -
Yes, it's much less interesting now!
My reasons for saying their WTC will be zero are that I didn't think having children affected your WTC.
In which case if they are not entitled to it without children then they're not entitled to it with children.
Your figures in post 23 seem to contradict this. Where did you get them from?0 -

Those are taken from the HMRC tables - you have to search for each one separately on the website but they exactly match the three tables on my PDF.Mortgage | £145,000Unsecured Debt | [strike]£7,000[/strike] £0 Lodgers | |0 -
OK I've taken screenshots so it's easy for you to see:
I'm convinced that the people at HMRC are giving her the wrong advice. They're telling her she can only claim CTC of £5,660 when the above says very clearly to me that she can actually claim the combined rate of £6,805.Mortgage | £145,000Unsecured Debt | [strike]£7,000[/strike] £0 Lodgers | |0 -

On the first two charts you've ringed the figure for people earning £15,000 when your friends actually earn £18,000. Is that what's making the difference?0 -
What you're missing is that you just make a single tax credits claim. All your entitlements are added together (CTC AND WTC) and then reduced by a taper on earnings of 41%. What's left is what you get. The tables you're looking at aren't entitlements: they're a rough guide of what you can expect to receive depending on EXACT income and EXACT circumstances.0

Aah, okay! So now I'm with you. I had thought that the table represented groups of 'income up to...' so yes, I can now see what I'm missing.
So then a person earning exactly £15,000 WOULD get combined CTC and WTC, but a person earning over £17,729 would ONLY get CTC. Aaaand, relaxSo the HMRC advice was correct after all. And the PDF was correct too.
Thanks for your help - it's a shame she won't be able to claim any more, but we'll get working on some old-style moneysavingMortgage | £145,000Unsecured Debt | [strike]£7,000[/strike] £0 Lodgers | |0 -
Arg, actually now I've taken another look and it still doesn't make sense!
IF they were earning exactly £20,000 then they would get £3,965 CTC, or £4,755 CTC+WTC. But hang on, if someone earning over £17,729 isn't entitled to WTC, then why is that combined value higher???Mortgage | £145,000Unsecured Debt | [strike]£7,000[/strike] £0 Lodgers | |0
