Taking out new policy with same insurance company?

Hi there,
I've just had a renewal invitation for car insurance from my existing insurer (Aviva). So after trawling through the usual comparison sites, I thought I'd try Aviva's website and went for a new quote, using exactly the same details. The price was almost £100 cheaper than that on the renewal invitation (this didn't really surprise me).
What did surprise me a little was that the quote confirmation screen said that I qualify for "15 weeks free insurance as a new customer" on one line, and that I qualify for a "discount of up to 15% as an existing policyholder" on the line below. So now I'm a tad confused - am I appear to be both a new and an existing customer at the same time!
Having read a few topics on here, the general consensus appears to be that I should cancel the renewal and take out the cover as new business. Is this right? Has anyone had any experience of this specific scenario, and more importantly has anyone tried this and had the policy cancelled or offered at a higher price?
Thanks in advance.

You can be both, for example you could be a Home customer and buying your Car insurance from them for the first time and therefore you are a new customer (car) but also an existing policyholder (home).
Need to read the T&Cs that are listed on the website/ in the policybook online to see if there are any clauses about new customer discounts only being applicable to XYZ type people etc which could cause you problems down the line.0 -
I understand what you're saying, but in this instance I would be both an old and new customer for the same product. How do I add a signature?0

Quidco is a knightmare to get the cashback from these daysDon't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.0

Any other advice / opinions please ?How do I add a signature?0

Hi Figment
Unfortunately unless you have an additional policy with ourselves the 15% existing customer discount could not be applied. Any of the following policy types held directly with ourselves would enable the discount to be included.
Motor Insurance (for a different vehicle)
Home Insurance
Annual Travel Insurance
Life Insurance
Private Pension Policy
I hope that helps but if you have any further questions or queries please dont hesitate to email me directly David.hyam@aviva.co.uk

Hi Dave
Thanks for the reply. I'll have to check whether I have any of the above policies - I seem to recall I received something in the post a couple of years ago (before I had the motor cover) relating to changes to a policy.
Failing that, how would I go about getting the existing customer discount removed from the quote? How do I add a signature?0 -

All of the others are closer to the initial renewal price. One was close, but the excess was exorbitant. Taking off the 15% discount still makes this the cheapest quote. How do I add a signature?0

It you have gone onto their website, and put in the information they have asked for correctly, the onus is on them to ask the right questions, and then to use it correctly. It's not up to you to police the quote for any possible mistakes in their software, so long as you have answered all questions asked truthfully.
If they have offered you a god price, I'd take it.
Refuse the autorenewal in writing, and take out the new policy online.
Especially if they do try to claw back the 15%, and they're still the cheapest.0
