    CATCH:
The only catch to it is that if you call 0845 and 0870 in the evenings and weekend.
Cost of calling 0845 is 0.50p/min evenings and weekend
and for 0870 is £1.50/min evenings and weekend
The 0845 price (½p per minute) is, of course, very cheap.

Are you sure the 0870 price is not just an (unfortunately common) error with the way ½p and 1½p is written?

If those prices are, in fact, 0845 - 0.5p (£0.005) per minute and 0870 - 1.5p (£0.015) per minute, that would be identical to BT's evening charges and, as BT now charges day/night rates 7 days a week, AOL would be cheaper than BT during the day at weekends.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • According to the AOL Talk U/L website tariff for call charges calls to either 084 or 087 will be a MAXIMUM of 10p per minute either day/weekends/evenings - that's that clarified then

According to their rate card AOL adopt the same pricing policy as BT for 0845/0870.

    6p connection at all times.

    0845. Daytime 2p. Evenings half a pence.

    0870. Daytime 6p. Evenings 1.5p.

    No special rates for weekends.
  • Apologies if this has been repeated elsewhere. I have had a look, but cannot see the exact terms of the offer I have been, well, offered!

I have been with AOL for probably a couple of years now. I recently received a letter offering me an AOL Talk package, no monthly subscription fee, and you get free calls anytime day or night to UK landlines (starting 01,02,03)*

    No minimum term contract

Theres no break in your service - keep your exisiting phone number (simply continue paying your BT line rental)

    * - Offer ends 30/11/08

Sounds good - is it?? Or is there a catch??

Is that free for life (not just for the first 12 months), because that's what we're on and it's very useful having inclusive calls all day.

Are you on the 'up to 8MB' broadband already? If not, you could try to get that thrown in by calling AOL customer service.

I noticed a while back that 03 numbers weren't actually included due to a fault, but they have hopefully sorted that out now.

Will AOL talk customers now get 0845 and 0870 numbers for free now that BT have announced they are scrapping call charges for both numbers:

Hopefully they will. In the meantime I'll continue to look for an 01/02 number instead of using 0845/0870.
