The only mugs are those that believe any company that claims to be the cheapest for any product.

exactly, not sure how all the major supermarkets can "guarantee" to save you money over their competitors

WOW I'm utterly flabbergasted about the responses on here. The point is it's an out and out lie. Not a marketing thing that's a bit devious or gives you warm fuzzy feelings for one brand over another.

MSEers may be savvy and rightly disbelieve our beloved Tesco friends but their marketing absolutely says to the casual reader "we checked other prices so you don't have to, and we're cheapest". It's a complete fabrication and absolutely needs to be stopped.

In addition of course, you could further boycott tesco more than you do now, for trying to take you for a mug.

I couldn't agree more. Bit shocked with other peoples view. I didn't buy the tv, but just read the article in Which. I appreciate they want to make money, but Tesco is far bigger than Dixons so it's not like it doesn't have purchasing power and it is misleading to compare with the likes of Homebase to try and show a saving. It is the only site that doesn't compare to a fixed group of companies but rather manipulates the results to try and make out it is cheaper. The odd product is one thing, but this investigation found it was more expensive for every single product (tv). So it is misleading to have any kind of price check promise. If you buy from there you would get ripped off and frankly most people buying from Tesco wouldn't expect it to have huge price difference.

I posted about this months ago - they are really sneaky. The bit that got me is that they will tell you a price from company X if it is higher than them, but will ignore it if lower. So when you use the site you think that company X must not sell that model, when in fact the abscence of it on the price check means they do and it is cheaper :)

Looks like the usual thing has happened, tesco has had sucess built on the back of what was good customer service and good pricing. They are now "in it to win it" and have as you said "lost their way".

    Vote with your feet people!

well indeed, and I do, unless I manually find out they're the cheapest, and hope it's a loss leader :)

My concern is this is quite blatent. It's one thing to hint or not compare against other companies, but this is real serious manipulation of something that purports to be a service to the consumer.

same tv still £329 at Amazon and Dixons including delivery.

    Still £399 at Tesco.

In my earlier post they claimed under "price check" to be matching John Lewis at £399 when John Lewis included a 5 year guarantee in the price and delivery, which would cost you an additional £139 at Tesco giving you a total price of £538.

But look today, John Lewis has disappeared from "price check" why???

Well because the SAME tv is £349 at John Lewis with a 5 year guarantee!

So TESCO £538 or JOHN LEWIS £349

How can a once great company treat customers like this, shame on you.

BUT WAIT it is still cheaper than Homebase......:T

Yes it's a lie. But marketing is all about being economical with the truth which is what Tesco have done in your second paragraph. They've selectively chosen prices from other retailers to give the impression that Tesco are the cheapest. It's cynical and misleading. But that's what marketing has always been about.

Anyway I'm off to light up a Camel because more doctors smoke them than any other cigarette.
