You have a odd definition of "free". Personally I would never treat something as "free" if its been bought for me as a gift by a loved one. "Free" says to me that there is no consequence, I can throw it away and nothing is lost. A gift on the other hand is very different.

Never mess with a wife and her kitchen!

Seriously though everyone has different ideas about what elements are needed in a kitchen so I wouldnt design one for someone else. On the other hand if it was a truly free kitchen won in a competition I wouldnt mind so much and would adapt my useage to fit the kitchen because it was free. I couldnt do that knowing my husband had gone out and spent money on the wrong layout or style. If that makes sense...

Yeah... I managed to collect a whole kitchen on Freecycle (it took well over a year to get everything) and then paid a local carpenter £300 to do whatever he could with it - he designed the layout according to what he had to work with. That's a free kitchen (or close enough).

But if my husband was going to fork out thousands of pounds to put one in, he had better not deprive me of the joy of choosing what I want!

We have 3 women in our house. It took them 6 months, several redesigns and trips to several different outlets to decide on a kitchen. And we still have to sort out the tiles and the floor!
