Birthdays are good for you. Statistics show that the people who have the most live the longest.

Here something I am curious about. Say I was paid weekly, If I start work on a Monday I will be paid the Friday of the following week as you have to do a lying week. Does that mean say if I was paid monthly and I started today I wouldn't be paid until the end of March? Or does a lying month not exist?

Falko: Its always worked like this wherever I've worked:

Weekly - tend to get paid the end of week 2 for week 1.

4 weekly - paid end of week 5 for weeks 1-4

monthly - usually paid per calendar month and any changes to the last 3-4 working days (such as being ill on the 31st and not qualifying for sick pay) will be deducted for the following month. So you'd be paid for calendar month 1 on the last (working day/Friday/whatever your contract says) of Calendar month 1 with any adjustments being done calendar month 2. Some employers may pay overtime for calendar month 1 in calendar month 2 though.

If you started today you'd be probably paid for the 2nd Feb - 29th Feb and that would probably be actioned on the 24th in order to be in the back on the 29th. Should you then be sick one day during the 25th to 29th then that would be deducted the following month.

It largely depends on the contract for monthly pay but I've not known an employer to have a 'lying' month personally. There was a thread on here a while ago about someone whose employer paid on 15th March for all of February work though so different arrangements do exist. (I also know of one employer who pays 15th Feb for all of Feb though so its not always bad.)
  • I've had four employers who have paid on the 15th of the month but you have been paid in advance until the end of the month so the beginning of the month pre payday is paid in arrears and the rest of the month in advance. To me this is normal as I've had so many employers do this (two public sector, two privatised utilities) but to most people this would be a bit odd I think!
