i have sold various stuff using gumtree or friday-ad- both free, cash only on collection by buyer..

otherwise, amazon- check out their free listing days,

or put photos with info on flickr, and setup a paypal a/c

Thanks, I needed cheering up. I think the OP was talking about selling things and needing a site for business not getting rid of some old t-shirts and DVDS.

Base level and full site are two different things. For 20k I would expect the product photography with decent licenses to be included along with the whole site design and all categories along with all products listed.

If you do all the listings, photos, categories yourself you could knock a hell of a lot of that 20k.

It's all about search engines, google being the main one, if you don't invest to get your site high up in google then you are wasting your time, it is a very expensive thing to do, and is ongoing, certainly a lot more than ebays fees. Thats not to mention any other merchants and website costs.

OP with ebay you are getting millions of potential buyers every week, on your own site your will get nothing without high investment. Ebay is ready made for you, if you can't afford the fees then you need to adjust your pricing. Whatever you do, the set up and fees are high, running a business comes with overheads, Ebays overheads are not that bad, and it's all done for you.

That doesn't really answer the question.

They must have given you a breakdown of what each element of your site would cost.

    Hosting
    Domain
SSL (if not using a third party)
    Design
    Editing
    SEO
    etc

Depending on the three products you're selling, it may not be advisable to go ahead with the website plan. You'll need to take into consideration the cost of purchasing the website name, hosting the site, designing the site as well as any percentages that RBS worldpay or other carts may charge.

The most important thing to remember is that on ebay, you'll already have built up a reputation as a seller and have a potential customer base provided via ebay but if you move onto a website directly you'll have to start from the ground up again.
+ 1000 – earning customers with e-bay is far easier, than on your own; promoting your own website most likely will cost you more than 3% e-bay fee.
  • Hi there,

You have probably set up by now but just in case you haven't take a look at https://www.gbbo.co.uk (Getting British Business Online). I've just designed my own site and it's working fine. GBBO are working in association with https://www.yola.com who are the hosting company.

The site is free for 1 year and you can obtain a domain name free for 2 years - which I thought was rather good.

It may not be of any use to you - but nothing ventured -nothing gained!

    Good luck,

    Reg

I'm sure I just read this. Search the forum for GBBO, you won't want to go near them afterwards.

    Hiya,

Try freewebstore.org. If you have the free version you can have upto 15 products for sale without paying a thing. If you want upto 50 products and also the ability to upload your products to Google Shopping and have Adsense, etc, it's £6.99 per month.

I have the £6.99 a month one and their customer service is brilliant. I once asked them a question and within a minute I had a personal reply.

P.S. If you want your own domain name you can lease them from 123-reg.co.uk. I managed to find a .co.uk domain to lease for 2 years for £6.98. Then it's simple to link it to your freewebstore shop.

I don't use free webstore because they don't suit me, but they were highly recommended by someone I know who's had a website with them for years and never had a problem selling internationally, and getting his products on google searches and google products (after a bit to tweaking).

Do you need a cart that gives you 10000 products, 10 languages and 25 currencies? Would an expensive, top of the range design give you any competitive advantage? If you do then you need to spend a bit more money on your site.
Speed, seo, google products submission are areas that are much more important than design, an average looking site with good seo and google placement will get sales, one with a fantastic design but no customers will be a waste of money.
At the same time if you sell luxury items an average looking website will not cut it. But I'm sure you'll know this already :)

For hosting I recommend you look at vidahost, their support is just the best I've ever come across. Make sure that if you don't go for a hosted cart, you go with someone who uses cpanel, as it makes life much easier when you need to download a cart like opencart etc.
If you go hosted make sure you register and own your own domain, and just point it to your store, as some are known for making it as difficult as you can to transfer

    Hth :)

this means they own and control your domain, I would advise against that as your domain is essential to your business and they make it very difficult for you to transfer when you want to move :)
