It amazes me how many people expect the general public to flock to their websites and buy their products when they aren't even prepared to invest in their own website.

Free websites are great for personal stuff where it doesn't need to be reliable or even look professional. Playing at having a website will not do you any favours and should be seen as a tool in which you invest in. A poor looking and unreliable website will just deter people so it will never work or it will work very poorly. That doesn't mean you have to spend thousands but a clean, basic, neat and reliable site will work far better than a flash based or limited template unreliable site will do.

The website is an extension to your business and far too many people expect to put up any old rubbish and traffic will coming flooding in, then they wonder why they only getting a few hits per month with very limited sales. A bad website will do you far more harm than good and apart from the limited sales you will get from it you will have also wasted a lot of time.

Its madness, everyone wants web presence to compete with others but they aren't prepared to invest in this area of the business yet they still expect the general public to invest in their business by buying their goods/services.

How would a carpenter who was just playing at it last if he decided instead of investing in the tools he required would just try it first by using his swiss army knife and a couple of screwdrivers, he would't last quite simply. He could be the greatest carpenter in the world but it would look very poor and wouldn't give people the confidence to use his services if they were looking for a decent job.

Either pay for the site to be designed if you lack the skills or don't have the time to do it yourself. Pay for a decent level of hosting where they ensure maximum uptime and support.

Free hosting doesn't ensure anything, they make no promises. If your website is down fairly often what sort of image does that send to potential clients? If your business website has google ads on again what sort of image does that show? If your hairdressing wix site looks just like the plumbers wix site or the interior designers wix site what image does that portray?

Most of the free sites require you keep their link in the footer, no offence but if you can't invest in your business website why should I invest in your products or services. People always judge a book by its cover, even subconsciously and usually without even realising it. If your not committed to your business website why would you be committed to the customer??

Plenty of opensource solutions out there such as wordpress/opencart etc that are only limited by the creator yet are available to all.

I know someone who had a cheap website, looked pretty but they might as well have been invisible, everything on it was wrong and google just couldnt recognise it.

Anyhow we are looking at websites at mo for ecommerce and the quotes are about £20,000 base level.

What I do know is if you want an ecommerce site there has to be some level of investment, if it is done wrong then it might as well not exist.

It all depends what you want it for and where you want to take it.

Have to say 20k is not for a base site that would be a lot more and probably includes all the content and SEO for a large ecommerce set up
