400w wont keep you all that warm though - you might find it useful to research the different kinds of heater and decide which type would suit you and the size etc of your room best - they heat in different ways - and some warm up quickly and some more slowly so you need to see which suits you the best. Also look on the 'Preparing for winter' thread where there are lots of ideas for keeping warm.0 -
It has to be warmer than it is without it tho! lol.. Thank u, I will check it out 2moro, Off to bed now! Thanks all, Nanite!0

Hi all,
New to this but need to air some frustrations.
I have bought a house that has a field behind it owned by the District Council. The field is leased to the Parish Council for some 99 years I believe. They use it for a car park two to three times a year, not for anything else. I have a gate out of the bottom of my garden that enters it but wanted to buy more as a garden extension. I have approached the local Authority who state they would of course consider selling it but would need the Parish Council to relax the lease for me to buy it. I have approached the Parish Council who state that they wont. The field is a good 100 yds by 200 yds in size. I want 20foot only and offered the Parish all the rest for nothing if they relaxed the lease. The response was that they did not want to relax the lease as it may set a precedent in the village and did not want to expand the borders of the village. They then buy another plot of land and tell me this was extending the parish boundary not the village boundary, sucks. I still want to go ahead with trying and wondered if anyone knew the next process to start getting the Parish to relax the lease. Very frustrating dealing with these people. It seems daft that someone can use a field so little and not see the sense in what I am offering, to cap it off the field has never been three quarters full.
Can anyone help?

Hi guys.. Just to update u all, I spoke to my letting agent and they said Ive to put everything in writing along with gas bills and meter readings, and it will all be passed to the landlord. The letting agent said if it was up to her, she would request a radiator, new fire AND new windows!!! but she cant authorise without landlords say so! I have written the letter and enclosed all info she asked for and will be sending it recorded delivery first thing 2moro morning!

I don't think your father has given you the right info regarding the cost of the gas fire. The kind of fires you describe are still sold, mainly to landlords & people who prefer this radiant type of fire. With a gas fire, it's the efficiency that counts, ie; what percentage of the heat you pay for goes straight up the chimney, & what percentage actually heats the room. Those radiant style fires are not the most costly to run I think you will find. The most costly are generally some of the gas inset coal fires or basket type fires, many are only 25% effiecient.
I have central heating, but in my living room tend to use the gas fire most to save on having to heat the whole house unnecesarily. It's the room where I spend the most time & the room I most want to b snug & warm.
If I were you & living in a rented house I loved & wanted additional heating, I'd pay for it myself! In the past when I lived in rented accomodation I was always more than happy to pay out for any improvements that were for my benefit & comfort, but sadly, people don't seem to feel the same way these days. I think it must be very hard being a landlord now.The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0 -
I have no objection to paying for it myself, I think I said it in an earlier post. I asked the landlord last winter when I broke my Ankle but he said at the time he didnt feel it needed doing and to review it in a years time, which is what I've done. The letting agent has said if it was up to her, it would all be done and paid for, but cant authorise without landlords say so. My neighbour next door has a fire and a radiator in his lounge, and the letting agent is baffled as to why mine hasnt, when all the houses are owned by the same company who bought them off the RAF!0
