Heating in Lounge of rented accomodation

Hi all

I live in a house which is rented, I waited 10 yrs for this house, I love it now im here and dont want to move, however, it has one drawback. The only heating in the lounge is an old gas fire and no radiator. I have radiators in every other room but the lounge. The gas fire is costing me so much to run, that I only have it on for an hr in the morning and an hr in the evening. The landlord said that because there is a source of heating there in the form of the fire, that I cant have a radiator put in! I am sitting here now at 7.30pm and its currently 12 degrees and needless to say I am freezing! My son is upstairs all cosy and warm as the heating is on! Can someone please tell me if I have any rights to have a radiator put in, or at least a more economical gas fire?! I really dont want to move from here as I love it here, this is the only drawback!!!
Thanks in advance!!

I am looking at getting an oil filled one, but its having the money to buy one! My Gas & Elec bill is currently costing me £127 a month, due to the gas fire costing so much!! Im sure there must be some legislation which says a house should be a certain temperature! you know like the work regulations!?

    No.

The landlord has provided a source of heating.

You (presumably) knew this when you signed up to this, tenancy. " I waited 10 yrs for this house"!

The only option is to offer to pay for the cost of an aditional rad to be added to the existing central heating system (asuming the boiler is big enough to cope) and see if the LL is willing to agree to this. Maybe start by offering to pay half and see if that works.

When I viewed the house, I truly didnt notice there wasnt a rad in the lounge! But I will ask if they would object to going half!

Could you maybe use another room in the house in the evenings when you want to sit and relax and watch tv? Bedroom perhaps - I use the kitchen in the winter - it's quite big and can fit small sofa in - as the living room just doesn't get warm enough and no point in paying extra when there are other warm rooms available. Snuggle in bed with the tv and a cuppa - lovely and cosy - - - and cheap!!

That will probably cost more to run than the gas fire.

Up until I bought my present house 20 years ago I never had central heating, just a coal fire in the living room and paraffin heater in the hall with the bedroom doors left open for a couple of hours before going to bed.

Got it wrong, its not an oil filled one, its an elec rad u plug in, a panel heater i think she called it! Trouble is, this house is so big, that u need to have the heating on all day for the heat to flow through to the lounge! The gas fire is one of the really old ones with the 4 rectangle panels on it, my dad said they cost loads to run, and id be better off with one of the newer ones that are more economical!

I agree absolutely! But no point suffering for the sake of using the room Your bills will be loads less if you just close that room off and use another one instead. Electric heaters can cost a lot to use.
