Clothes fading (really quickly) in the wash

Any ideas how to avoid this?

DS2 always complains that his clothes always seem to fade really quickly. I can't understand why, because his stuff gets washed along with everyone else's and yes, our stuff fades too, but he's maintaining his fade more.

I used to used Bold 2 in 1 powder (the blue box - can't remember the name of it!) but then changed to Ariel ActiGel for Coloureds. He's still grumbling that his stuff is fading far quicker than any of his mates' clothes do (he's comparing Tshirts etc bought at gigs - so they've been bought at the same time and from the same place). I have asked him to find out what detergent his mates use, but not had an answer yet!

So - any suggestions please, as to how to prevent clothes from fading so quickly?

Maybe his mates clothes do not get washed so often.....

Seriously though, I use the blue or orange bold gel and our clothes are absolutely fine.

I use ariel powder with no problems. What temperature do you use? Should be a normal 30-40 degree wash, the main thing l do though is wash clothes and put on the line INSIDE OUT as the sun will fade clothes as they're drying. I iron inside out too, fold back the right way and just go over the top edges with the iron.

    Happy moneysaving all.

I tend to wash dark things inside out, maybe try this and see if it helps?

LOL I think Blue Monkey might have hit the nail on the head :rotfl:

If they are black t-shirts I'd suggest washing them all together, inside out, using a gentle detergent. Maybe Surcare or one you use for woollens?

If you are line-drying them outside it might also be bleaching them a bit? Not that we've got that much sunshine!

my mum always used to soak any new clothes with strong colours in salt water before the first wash, he was convinced it 'fixed' the colours so they didnt fade
  • Like other posters have suggested, I always turn clothes inside out before washing them. It does seem to make things last longer.

I used to dry my clothes on an airer facing my bedroom window, which gets the full sun all afternoon. I didn't really think about it until I took the curtains down to wash them and they had really faded.

I use washing soda with my soap powder too, I heard that it can help to keep colours "true", not sure if it works like that but it does eke out the washing powder for much longer!

Is it only band merchandise that fades? For the price, some of even the genuine ones are very poor quality. I know the band t shirts I had never lasted long. My metalhead friend who's been to more gigs than I've had hot dinners has thesame problem!

I think his mates shirts are just washed less. Maybe his mates have to do their own laundry :rotfl:

I use fairy non bio and wash/hang dark colours inside out.
