How far are the places you have to visit? Could you get there on a pushbike? Is buying a scooter cheaper than buying a replacement car?
May not be good ideas but trying to see what might help.Debt at highest: £8k. Debt Free 31/12/2009. Original MFD May 2036, MF Dec 2018.0 -
I cover about 150 miles a day
Would be good for my waistline on a pushbike but might take me a little while to get things done!
I will have a look in to scooters, that hadn't even crossed my mind, thank you. No idea if I would be able to ride one, but I shall do some research!0 -
150 miles per day? Woah, you definitely need to invest in a reliable car if you are doing that.
How many miles do you do a year?0 -
If you've only had it a few months and bought it from a dealer, get it back to them, sharpish, and get them to sort it out.0

newfoundglory, that was the idea with this car. My last car was a decent one and died and so I got this one as a cheap runner whilst I saved up for another decent one. Unfortunately this one hasn't lasted anywhere near long enough!
I guess I do between 12-15K a year but am not sure for certain0 -
It was private sale unfortunately0

Do you (or any friends) not know of any local guys who dabble in car repairs. Brakes are nowt flash, not rocket science and a lot of blokes can put them right for a few quid. Way cheaper than a garage, and in most cases just as good a job (in my own experiences).
Also, maybe a risk, but one I'd take, if you were able to drive it to the garage, you can still drive it now. Just take it easy but either get it sorted right away or get a new one asap. Needs must.

Edit: And IMO, never trust a garage's opinion. There as bad as cowboy builders. Not doubting your brakes are kaput, but just sounds like you need new discs and pads on the back from what you've said. And considering the front does most of the braking, hardly a life threatening situation providing you're not a Lewis Hamilton wannabe...Mortgage Paid Off 5th October 2013

Just wanted to add that I bought a W plate Mondeo in September, and a week later, the front brakes started grinding. I've changed pads on bangers I've had in the past, but never discs. Had to order the discs to pick up the next day, as I knew the old ones would be knackered.
Looked in the Haynes, saw it wasn't a big job, and knocked both sides off in an hour. Total cost, discs and pads and an hour of my time, £65.
Rear discs can be more of a pain (defo on my car) due to the handbrake configuration, but I still think a local DIY guy will be at least £100 cheaper than a garage.
Good luck.

Work wouldn't hire a car for me. I work for a charity and there is no way the budget would stretch for that.
My parents are looking at getting a lease car with their payment details etc for me, as I wouldn't get finance on anything.
They have bailed me out so often though, I am feeling really really bad about it.0
