Western Digital drive and file record segment

Today on turning on my computer windows showed me a blue screen and your drive L: needs to be checked.
upto 5% and about 30 file record segments showed, followed by 8% and more of the same no idea how many in the end as I decided to watch tv instead whilst it was scanning.
so after 40min i switched back and got a list of deleting file record followed by a number if i'm correct thats should be to do with the MFT table.

more information about the drive.
its a western digital 1.5tb the 2nd WD i've had this one replaced the original drive that i bought from ebuyer which lasted 8months, this one is currently just over 15months old, replaced in oct 2010 i think, and used as a storage drive.
I havent tested the drive with the WD TOOLS yet, but does it sound like its FAILING like the last one, and as i can still access the drive should i be moving the data off it quickly.

neither of my other drives which are older the samsung 1tb or 1.5tb which have both been connected to the same controller have ever shown the same problem, so i'm assuming its the drive.

If it has reported bad sectors - should see this after the chkdsk report after it finishes, then definately back everything off it. Run the WD diagnostics. If you go to the WD website warranty check screen, enter the serial no it should tell you if still covered by warranty - usually retail kit is covered for 3 years by WD. If you missed the report, it is saved in the event viewer under winlogon.

The problem with these very large disks, especially if not partitioned is that any check/format cleaning up takes forever!

just downloaded WINdlg_124.zip from WD and run a quick test and i got this screen

    2r61y86.jpg

problem is the drive is pretty much filled, and I only have about 130gb free total from 6tb, guess i could delete my acronis backup files 2009 to present, but even that would only give me about 56gb, I wonder if the reason acronis failed when I tried to backup my C drive or mount an image file it was because it had trouble reading from the L: WD drive.??

checking on the WD warranty screen first is said invalid serial, due to the fact i typed in the WD-WCAVY270733 as shown in the Windows Data Lifeguard Diagnostics . The software can provide the serial and model number of the WD drive in your system. but once i removed the WD- is work and showed The product is under warranty and available for replacement. 03/28/2013.

I see the cost of hdd has come down, i could just go out and buy a 2tb samsung and copy all the data across. and then RMA the drive.

been reading up, decided to run the extended test on the drive, maybe a bad idea, as when i started typing this line the time had dropped to 8hrs but is now going up 16hr 04 and rising, choices.

    1. buy a new 2tb samsung drive, copy the data to it, wipe wd and retest, and send it back for replacement and then sell replacement drive as this is the replacement drive from the original one i bought that failed. so i no longer trust WD or ebuyer from where it was purchased.
    currently £99.98 http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/harddrives-internal/sataover1tb/hd204ui.html + £8 for an external case.

    2. delete some of the data from my other samsung drives, and try and squeeze 1.5tb data onto what space i have remaining.
    no chance.
    3. see if my nephew has a spare hdd i can borrow and put as much onto it as possible.

    4. try and work out if the controller card is the reason this is happening and possibly replace the ageing MB with a new MB combo. link for the one i was going to buy when i actually decide to buy it. I thinking my next MB for the next 10years.

Are you able to access any data on the drive? The error on WD diagnostics looks rather terminal, but you then suggest deleting stuff - just a little confused on this point.

Regretably you may not be able to recover some or all data on that drive - generally you should always keep 15% disk space free - going above this often creates problems.

Use the WD option to reformat the drive once you have got off what you can - use the WD write zeros option full - will take awhile though.

Samsung HDD's are good and do very well on compartive tests, I use them in preference when available.

I don't think you can blame ebuyer for the problem you are having with the WD hdd's, especially as the warranty interface is with WD. Difficult to say if it is the controller - you could add a sata controller pci-e card inexpensively, to your current rig. It may just be the way you are using them, and possibly over filling them?

Ref your MB, I generally prefer Intel chips at the mo, definately knock the socks off AMD at present - worth doing your own research - yes AMD are cheaper, but you're not getting anyway near the performance; AMD lost out when Intel introduced the i series - the i5 2500k is the best for price/performance - and can be overclocked to 4.6GHz - take a look.........

Given that you are clearly quite clued up on PC's, do you not already have a back up of the data?

macman the simple answer is NO, i used to burn dvd's but go fed up with the amount of storage they require and cost of them, when you consider how many dvd-r @ 4.3gb per disc over 1396gb of data per hdd, will use.

ok, update, been over to novatech and bought the 2tb + enclosure, i also bought the 6core MB bundle which i now regret in the fact i wont be able to use it, at novatech whilst i was still thinking about buying the MB bundle i asked if they had it on display but they didnt, they did have the 8core on display and said the MB looked like that one, however that had an IDE socket. , all my dvd drives are PATA, and theres not 1 single IDE socket on the board. so I cant install the drivers for the Motherboard.
which also means I also have no drive to install the OS on. As my intention was to use my 300gb ide hard drive for the OS, I suppose I could clear some space onto the 1tb sata drive and use that, but I still wont be able to install the OS.

Yes I know I could just pay out another £15 for a sata dvdrw but considering i have 4 dvd-rw ide drives 2 of which are currently installed, the other 1 spare. funny i did have a sata dvd-rw drive but i gave it to someone, as i didnt think i would need it but that was over 3years ago.

update just ran the full scan, heres a quick report
Test Option: EXTENDED TEST Model Number: WDC WD15EADS-00S2B0 Unit Serial Number: WD-WCAVY2709733 Firmware Number: 01.00A01 Capacity: 1500.30 GB SMART Status: PASS Test Result: FAIL Test Error Code: 08-
read the manual to the testing program and cant see what 08- is, unless its handling failure,

Just to keep people updated. I went out and bought a sata dvd-rw drive, locally. still havent built the computer.
I think i found the problem that caused the 1.5tb WD to go bad, a little program that was recommended on here to download the newest drivers for your system called Slim drivers.
seems funny that after i installed the drivers which that program downloaded that both my 1.5tb drives went bad. what you mean both? well after disconnecting the WD1.5tb which had about 120 file record segment errors, and i connected my 1.5tb samsung to the same controller that to developed a sector error, both drives where working perfectly before the updated drivers. small note: slim drivers also downloaded drivers for a sierra wireless whatever that is, and i have no wireless cards installed, when i clicked on a download for VIA usb drivers, 2nd note: installing the updated drivers for my usb caused my usb wireless mouse to stop working completely.
I had only wished that i used acronis to backup my hdd before installing that piece of rubbish. So now i'm on a old backup the last one i did of 2011 system seems to be running a little better.
so far i've formatted the 2tb external i bought 3 times, it initalize perfectly, but i managed to crash <before i use the old backup with slim drivers installed and with new drivers. whilst moving some files from my 1tb to my 1.5tb samsung. properly caused the 3 bad sectors, as i had to reset, formatting the drive was at 29% so i rebooted and started again.
but this time the system hanged, all disk management said was formatted 100%, and again had to reset. hence the reason this morning i used the last backup i created and reformatted the 2tb drive again and it just finished, whilst it was formatting i tried running firefox, but it didnt run, it showed in task manager but no actual screen, this is with the 2tb drive external connected.
a reboot and run of firefox and it showed, as i wouldnt be typing this, disconnected the 2tb external. weird as the other external i have, same case from same shop, i cant think why. maybe i didnt do what i did with the other one, aka samsung tools to change from 300 to 150< samsung hdds dont have a jumper. as this are going to be used on my new mb which has the 300 sata connection and usb is upto 400mb i didnt think this would cause a lock up.

and to make things worst. My brother turned up out of the blue with a laptop he wanted me to look at, which he believes is infected and i have to agree, task manager not running, malwarebytes can be run, infact everything i tried including trying the right click run with admin didnt work either.

can my week get any worst.

Can't help, but interesting to note that I very recently posted about Slim Drivers.
After seeing it recommended on here, I tested it on my old test/clunker (XP Pro) and it also downloaded the Sierra Wireless drivers, like yours, the PC had never been near anything wireless. Also, I too had to un-install the 'new' corded usb mouse driver.

A program to avoid I think.
    Move along, nothing to see.
