Credit card application help needed ASAP please

Hi
New to this but totally stuck. I have a linked address at my daughters house for my mobile phone as its in my name for her use and has been for 2 1/2 years now.
In November I applied for a capital one credit card using her address and my details, with her as a second card holder.
A letter was received from cap one saying further ID checks required and we didn't reply as decided against progressing with card. Another one of these letters arrived 2 weeks later, again we didn't reply.
Now, I have had a letter to MY home address from application fraud saying they suspect someone has used my details to apply for credit card and can I confirm it was me. I haven't responded yet as seems SO serious.
I have a letter written ready to say it was me using linked address and that I am sorry if this was wrong thing but the other issue is my wife didn't know I was helping my daughter so I don't want any other correspondence to MY home and have also put this on the letter.
Any help or advice gratefully received.
Many thanks

I would be carefull sending that letter, what you are doing can be seen as fraud/ money laudering. Also watch out they may put a cifas flag
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.
  • But would not telling them the truth be even worse? All I was trying to do was help my daughter. I was the one who applied (so therefore aware an application had been made) and therefore no application fraud apart from it being on the linked address but I hadn't realised I couldn't do that. I had put my daughter as a 2nd card holder on the application and if we had got the card she would have been authorised to speak on the account and manage the dealings, and I know she would pay the balance if there had been any.
If I don't reply, what could happen? Surely honesty is the best policy in all of this? Can't believe this has happened to me.
My other worry is that I did this without my wife knowing and she opens any post that comes to the house (something that has always happened with my permission) if she finds out about this my marriage could be on the way to failure.
If I do write a letter do you have any advice on how to word it. I am sure that they just want to know it was me and not some other fraudster using my details?
    Thank you in advance
  • I agree, dont send that letter.

This is basically the definition of fraud as you attempted to use an address which isn't yours to apply for credit.

Not sure about the logic behind this, but cancelling the application when they wrote to you twice would have been the wise thing.

Why can't your wife find out?

Thank you for your reply. I am so worried about this.
Basically my daughter when she was younger ended up in a lot of debt for various reasons and has turned her life around by repaying nearly all of that. When my wife found out she almost disowned her as a daughter, it was only when our grandson came along that this relationship gradually rebuilt. My daughter applied in her own name but was refused due to her credit file and as I was linked at the address said I would help by doing this for her.
Obviously I now know I have been wrong to do this but assume a simple sorry in't going to be good enough. My credit history is (was) perfect but now I expect the worst they will do is put a CIFAS on my file? Which is fine as I don't intend to apply for any more credit as I have my credit card and my wife has one of her own too.
On the form they sent through with the letter saying they suspected someone had used my details it asked had I ever lived at this address and if so for how long. What if I replied and said that I had moved I with my daughter due to marital problems, never put myself on the electoral roll as I thought things would resolve and that I applied for this credit there? Clutching at straws on how to get this matter resolved quickly and discreetly.
I really can't have any more letters regarding this sent to MY home address as my wife would leave and disown my daughter which I realise to a credit card company is just a family dispute.

    Thanks in advance
  • On the further ID request letter sent to my daughters it said that if we do not hear from you in 14 days we will cancel the application, hence why I didn't respond (although there is a mobile phone bill in my name that goes there I could have provided and the tv licence is in my name)
    Thanks

Tell them you live in both houses and the other was your new main house while renovation normal one so applied. Tell them you don't want card and job done
  • Will that be ok? Sorry, just a bag of nerves. I just don't want anything else to come to MY home address as I really don't want my wife to find out. Petty to be scared of upsetting the MRS at my age.
Thanks for you advice though, much appreciated.

They might want some identification to prove that you are you and not the fraudster they think you are (as you didn't respond to the identification requests)

I would expect a reply however, so if you have ID for your other address, it would probably be best to use that, to ensure the post goes there and your wife doesn't get it.
  • Thank you
So am I best to send a letter with a copy of phone bill etc to them saying it was me who applied for the credit or just not reply at all?
If so what do I put in the letter.
No credit was ever issued by capital one but from reading forums and posts I am aware they are very proactive where fraud is concerned.
    Thanks

Why are you being so secretive?

It would appear the marriage isn't that secure if you have to hide post from her. Why isn't your daughter applying for the credit card??
