  • Very good point. I keep forgetting that it takes a while to set up any DMP, and if I cancel all the credit card and car loan direct debits, that's what?, £648 not spent on them a month for February and March?

    Thank you Standingtall :j

I've read the full thread (and have posted before) and just wanted to say that, if you haven't already (and I might have missed it) but go to the CCCS website and do their debt remedy thing. It allows you to put in how much you spend on this and that and therefore gives you a reasonable amount to live on during your DMP
As you say, once you cancel the DDs for the credit cards, this gives you more money (obviously) and you won;t necessarily have to use all of the £648 to pay off your debt on a DMP.
Our LBM: Dec 2011. DMP started: Jan 2012. Debt at LBM: £41,568

    Oct 2012 = Current debt: £40,548.93
    Oct 2013 = Current debt: £39.054.70

And another point is RG that if your situation changes i.e you come into an inheritance or get another job you can up what your paying.

Well, I just phoned up CCCS - after getting home later than I planned - and spoke to a nice lady, little realising there were two numbers.
The advertised 0800 138 1111 one which the lady said was the helpline I had rung (which runs 8am to 8pm), even though it didn't last night, then gave me another number 0845 674 XXXX which I will need to ring to speak to an individual counsellor who can access my previously inputted Debt Remedy! So, it looks like I'm on the phone to them at 8am sharp. Shame that couldn't be a free 0800 number too :(

If ever I won millions I'd help these helplines ALL have a freephone number for people in need to call.
Not that I'm worrying about an expected 60 minute call to an 0845 number [GET ON WITH IT], sorry!

She also explained I wouldn't have to submit a new Debt Remedy as whoever I speak to can alter the figures over the phone, but the SOA calculator on http://www.makingsenseofmoney.com is different to the way you submit your expenses on the CCCS Debt Remedy Plan. It's still an SOA, but they have different categories, and what worries me greatly is that CCCS_Pavan replied to my post in the "Struggling with debt? Ask a debt advisor a question" forum, and put:
Hi Rochdale_Guy and thank you for your post.

It’s difficult to say why a DMP is your best solution without looking at your situation in more detail. However, as you’ve already completed Debt Remedy we already have all your information and we can discuss this with you if you get in touch.

You could also look at your budget in more detail to see what changes you can make to help clear your debts quicker.
You wouldn’t usually be allowed to save for a holiday on a DMP and is there space for another tenant or could you car share or use public transport for example? There’s a lot to consider and obviously some of these suggestions won’t be for you, but we can discuss this with you if you get in touch.

Oh £$%!, I've made allowances for that on my SOA and allocated £50 a month to pay for this holiday in June..... can't remember now if there was a space for holiday on the original CCCS DMP I completed in December, as I didn't keep any of it, stupidly.

When I ring them with the new revised SOA figures they might refuse to let me put aside £50 for a holiday and add that to the £57 it says I currently can afford......

    Man, I worry sooooooooooooooooooo much.

Doesn't help that my ex keeps calling me up really annoyed and upset (quite understandable) saying if I am going to do this DMP, I have to get it right and submit the proper figures, fair enough too. But she can't stand the sight of me and hates me for ruining our future and for lying to her, and won't come round to make sure I put the right figures in, and I can't go round to her :(

The things she really wants to know (after this shock and concealment) is how did the debt get so big? How could I let it get so big? Why didn't I tell her sooner? I should have told her when it was a more manageable £10,000. All valid points, but I need to get started on the CCCS DMP as soon as possible :(

Maybe I shouldn't come on here and post as people do say I just go round and round when I know what I should do, it's just a safe place to come here I guess.

I'll apply for that Co-Op basic account next then at least I can tell CCCS in the morning I've done that. Still haven't cancelled the Direct Debits for the car loan and the other 5 credit cards yet. The next batch of direct debits starts on the 16th too :(

I can't until I know I am on my way with CCCS.

    Oh boy.

At least I've given up the idea of getting that bank consolidation loan as they would be adding £6-7k on top of what I already own. That's ridiculous.

    :(

Don't beat yourself up, mate. Most of us on here (me included) have been right where you are now. "How could it have got this bad?" etc. Once your DMP is set up you'll feel much better because that great big balance will be decreasing every month. And all the little worries you have like "can I put this on my SOA?" or "what about my holiday?" won't be important any more. Here's a little insider info. When I set up my DMP with Payplan, they were a little -ahem- "creative" with my budget in order to create a little squeeze-room for me. Tell them about this holiday commitment. You might find that you suddenly acquire a dog that needs pet insurance...;)

Interesting that your ex is still coming round to have a go at you. Almost like she can't bear to break off from you...;)

Get on to the CCCS website NOW and request a call back. It will be their call and not yours ;)

That way you won't forget to ring them, and things won't get in the way of you doing it.

This is really important if you actually want to get things sorted!

The call back bit is under the contact us section on the right hand side of the page.

The sooner you take the plunge with this the sooner you get things moving and the closer you are to getting things sorted. Not easy, but needs to be done :)

Thanks, but I am now terrified more than ever as I just read on another thread (re: the Yorkshire Bank) that there offer from CCCS to them was refused due to continued spending on the account.

That's me right up the creek big time as I have today HAD to pay this week and next weeks rent on the MBNA card.

I have no other source of money available.

    I'm screwed :(

I can tell CCCS tomorrow that I have just cut up all the cards tonight and they can tell MBNA that, but from their point of view (MBNA), I'm like a car speeding along ignoring the stop lights by STILL using it. Oh hell.... how could I be so daft?

I had no choice. No one else could lend me the 2 weeks rent and I'd get evicted if I was late again.

    I can't cope.

That's my thread, and don't worry, it's just one creditor who is being a pain in the bum.

Firstly - cancel ALL the DD, yes, even the ones for credit cards and any loans. CANCEL THEM.
Open up that new bank account and get your priority debts, rent/mortgage, council tax paid out of it. The credit cards and loans are NOT a priority. I know it feels like it (it did for us as well) but they're not. You can, if you wish, send them each a token payment of £1 using a postal order.
